BBC iPlayer comes to Sky+, Hell reports incoming frost

BBC iPlayer comes to Sky, Hell reports incoming frost

The BBC and Sky may represent polar, warring opposites of the broadcasting business, but that doesn't mean their technology platforms can't get along. Following a promise made all the way back in January, internet-connected Sky+HD boxes will be able to access BBC iPlayer from today. The service has been integrated into Sky's world-class program guide, with users even able to plump to catch available shows in high definition. The announcement also let slip that 4OD, the last remaining holdout to the service, will be added in early 2013. If you've yet to hook your Sky box up to the internet, you just need an Ethernet cable or wireless adapter -- but let's hope for your sake they aren't at opposite ends of your house.

Pumpkin and Garbanzo Bean Soup - Homemade Baby Food Recipes

Nothing says fall like pumpkin? and nothing showcases pumpkin quite so well as a good old pumpkin soup!

As if all the nutrients in pumpkin weren?t enough (pumpkin is an excellent source of beta-carotene, vitamin C and calcium), we?ve teamed it up in today?s recipe with garbanzo beans, which also provide plenty of protein and iron.

The result? A delicious, velvety soup that is both warming and highly nourishing for your baby? not to mention easy to eat

This soup recipe is suitable for babies from 6 months of age who have already been separately introduced to all the ingredients. Some of the ingredients ? namely the garlic, onion, herbs and spices ? are not essential to the TEXTURE of the recipe, but do provide a robust, full flavour. That means you can leave them out if you don?t wish to include them in your little one?s diet as yet and your baby prefers a milder, more subtle flavour.

This recipe produces enough soup for a family of four to share? and we highly recommend giving it a try! The garbanzo beans give it a decadently creamy texture and it?s reassuring to know that the creaminess is from such a nutritious source!

If you don?t wish to use this as a family meal, then you can simply scale down the ingredients or freeze the leftovers ? this soup freezes nicely. You can also use portions of this soup as an interesting and unique sauce for pasta.

To Make Baby?s Pumpkin and Garbanzo Bean Soup You Will Need?

4 tbsp olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 lb fresh sugar pumpkin, peeled and diced
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 tsp paprika
2 tsp cumin
1 x 16 oz can of garbanzo beans (also known as chickpeas) ? either buy the reduced sodium variety or triple rinse regular beans and remove their skin
24 fl oz (3 cups) low sodium or homemade chicken stock
8 fl oz (1 cup) of pure, unsweetened apple juice

Heat the oil in a medium saucepan and add the onion and pumpkin.
Cook, stirring, for a minute or two, then add the garlic.
Continue cooking for several minutes until all the veggies are pale gold in colour.
Add the paprika and cumin and stir well, then pour in the garbanzo beans and the stock.
Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer, semi covered, for 30 minutes.
Add the apple juice, simmer for 5 minutes more.
Allow to cool, then puree in batches in a blender, or puree right in the pot with a hand blender until perfectly smooth.
Warm to a safe serving temperature and enjoy with baby.

5 Ways To Use Marketing Videos On Your Site Small Business Trends

I?m guessing you?ve heard about the power of video to your marketing efforts, right? For example, did you know that including video on website landing pages makes them 53 percent more likely to show up on the first page of Google? Or that a customer who watches videos of products/services is 85 percent more likely to make a purchase? Yeah. Those are all true.

As marketers, we hear these stats and they make an impact. Well, video makes the same impact to your customers.

If you?ve heard about the power of video but weren?t sure how to incorporate it into your small business, below are some ideas of where video can fit into your marketing mix.

1. To Simplify Concepts/Messaging

Whether you?re a technical company trying to simplify a product so normal users grasp it, or you want to break down a complicated concept to make a larger point, video can be your greatest ally. Video allows you to talk directly to your customers, while also visuals. As a result, it?s better suited for educating users and helping to spread your message.

For example, Stay Smart, Stay Healthy is a new-media venture that aims to help people understand something that is far too complicated ? the healthcare industry. How do they do it? Through whiteboard videos that make difficult concepts personable and show how they apply to our lives.

Here?s a video they did about how to get the most out of your health insurance. It currently has more than 145k views.

2. Your Brand Story

Social media has shown that users really do care about the story behind your company. We want to know more about the brands that we?re loyal to and we want to know more about the brands we?re considering being loyal to. Video helps to capture this.

For example, below is a video that my employer Overit created to show people who we are as a company and the types of project Overit has worked on. It?s given us an asset we can use to let people in and see what we?re all about and what we do.

3. Product Videos

Product videos show people what it is they?re about to buy. It breaks that third wall and shows them a living, breathing representation of what could be theirs if they?d just hit the purchase button. This is incredibly powerful ? regardless whether you?re selling a $500 technological gadget or just a pair of shoes.

For example, Zappos revealed a few years ago it was able to increase sales 6 to 30 percent simply by adding videos to product pages. They didn?t change anything else. All they did was add videos. That?s powerful.

Zappos is so crazy about reviews they even encourage users to submit their own videos to share their Zappos experience.

4. Customer Testimonials

One area that?s seeing a lot of growth right now are customer videos. Many of the larger brands are now creating campaigns solely around building video testimonials. They understand that there?s nothing quite as powerful as hearing from a customer, in their own voice and environment, how a company has helped them to achieve a goal or even improved their quality of life. These videos often run between :15 (perfect for Web) and :60, and are a great asset on their own, or paired with other marketing material.

5. Screencasts

Screencasts give small business owners another powerful way to add video content to their websites in a way that is helpful and beneficial to their user. Screencast videos allow SMBs to walk customers through a specific process and show them what is happening (or what should be happening) on their computer during different stages of a task. Screencast videos are great for directing customers through sometimes-confusing tasks like setting up a new account, engaging with the community for the first time, or how to install a piece of software.

Above are just a few ways that marketers can take advantage of video on their website. The possibilities for using video to market your brand, stand out, and to show off what you have to offer are virtually endless. How have you been using video to market your company? Or, if you?ve been shy to, what?s been holding you back?

Selling a Home During the Holidays - The Property Exchange

COLDWELL BANKER? THE PROPERTY EXCHANGE RECOMMENDS USING HOLIDAY SPIRIT TO SELL A HOME AT THE END OF THE YEAR

Cheyenne, Wyoming 10-29-2013 ? The end of the year is not just about holiday shopping, family gatherings and other festive events.? Many people use the time off to move before the New Year.? The professionals at Coldwell Banker The Property Exchange offer the following tips to help sellers maximize their home?s charm and allure during the holidays:

Increase Curb Appeal: First impressions are critical. If the home is in a snowy area, make sure to clear the walkways and driveway.? Remove any late fall leaves, and ensure the path to the stairs is free of ice. Put up a few exterior holiday lights and decorations to display seasonal tidings and pride in ownership. Do not overdo the lighting. Keep it tasteful and consistent with the rest of the neighborhood. A holiday welcome mat outside the front door is also an inviting touch. ?

Keep the House Warm and Welcoming: November, December and January can be cold, so make sure the home is warm and cozy.? If the house has a fireplace, light a fire to bring the room to life and enhance the ambience.? Bake holiday cookies and treats to give the home an enticing aroma.

Decorate the Interior:? It is important not to overwhelm home shoppers with dramatic displays of holiday cheer, so be conservative with holiday decorations.? Decorate to accentuate the house, not to cover it.? Tasteful decorations will help connect buyers to the home, remind them of pleasant memories and help them imagine their own holiday celebrations there.

Remove the Lock Box: On a more practical note, sellers who are entertaining over the holidays should talk to their real estate sales associate about removing the lock box except during designated appointment times. The multiple listing service information may need to be changed to let sales associates know that there is a temporary showing procedure that requires buyers? sales associates to call in advance for an appointment.? It is best if the house is not shown when entertaining family and friends.

Watch the 'Hunter's Moon' live online

You can have a front-row seat for Monday night's (Oct. 29) full moon via a live webcast from the Slooh Space Camera, showing real-time views from an observatory on Spain's Canary Islands.

This full moon is called the " Hunter's Moon," named for hunting season, which is ripe now with the leaves falling and the deer fattened after summer.

Slooh's "Fright Night" broadcast will begin at 7 p.m. EDT. You can watch for free on Slooh's website: http://www.slooh.com.

The program will feature not just great views of the cratered moon, but a tour of other celestial "spooky" objects just in time for Halloween.

"The Hunter?s Moon will be up that night ? a perfect prelude to Halloween, since the moon plays a rich role in Halloween lore," Slooh officials wrote in a statement. "But, unknown to most of the public, other prominent celestial objects are even more deeply associated with 'the darker side' of the night."

The space camera will focus in on the Pleiades star cluster, also known as the Seven Sisters, "whose date of midnight culmination was the very origin of the original Black Sabbath, which evolved into All Hallows Eve and ultimately Halloween," according to Slooh officials. "Why was this beautiful blue cluster so associated with death and evil?"

Tune in to find out!

The webcast will be hosted by Slooh President Patrick Paolucci, Slooh outreach coordinator Paul Cox and Astronomy Magazine columnist Bob Berman.

The online Slooh Space Camera broadcasts weekly shows highlighting the wonders of the universe. The project launched on Christmas Day of 2003.

NYSE to trade electronically Monday, shut floor

NEW YORK (AP) ? The New York Stock Exchange and the NYMEX are shutting their trading floors in New York Monday as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the Big Apple.

But trading will continue electronically on both exchanges.

NYSE Euronext said Sunday it is putting in place its contingency plans beginning Monday and will announce later when the trading floor will reopen.

The New York Mercantile Exchange, a commodity futures exchange, also will be shutting on Monday its trading floor which is located in a mandatory evacuation zone. The CME Group, which owns NYMEX, said all electronic markets will open at their regularly scheduled times.

The moves come as Hurricane Sandy causes the shutdown of transportation systems throughout the region. Governor Andrew Cuomo said New York City's subways and buses will shut down Sunday evening. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered residents to evacuate some low-lying areas Sunday and said city public schools will close Monday.

Trading can still go on even without people yelling orders to buy and sell across the floor of the exchange because many orders on the NYSE are already handled electronically. On Monday, securities normally handled on the NYSE will shift to the purely electronic NYSE Arca.

The servers that handle all of the exchange's transactions are housed in Mahwah, N.J.

Trading has rarely stopped for weather. A blizzard led to a late start and an early close on Jan. 8, 1996, according to the exchange's parent company, NYSE Euronext. The NYSE shut down on Sept. 27, 1985 for Hurricane Gloria.

Since the Great Depression, the longest suspension in trading at the NYSE occurred after the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when the exchange closed for four days.

Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 75 mph as of Sunday afternoon, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began churning up the Eastern Seaboard. It was expected to hook left toward the mid-Atlantic coast and come ashore late Monday or early Tuesday, most likely in New Jersey, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic.

Forecasters said the monster combination could bring close to a foot of rain, a potentially lethal storm surge and punishing winds extending hundreds of miles outward from the storm's center. It could also dump up to 2 feet of snow in Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Top 10 Considerations When Integrating Social Media

Social media icons on a screen

In a world where the instant access to information has changed the way people in modern society communicate and collaborate, social media tools and social networking for many have become a paradigm that permeates their personal and professional lives. As a result, social media tools are partially responsible for introducing to the marketplace a new workforce and customer base that is challenging conventional methods of conducting business. In response to these changes, many organisations are re-evaluating the manner in which they share information among their workforce and respond to the demands of their customers.

At the heart of this new reality lies the project management world that heavily relies on the ability to effectively share and communicate project statuses to avoid bottlenecks and ensure success. Employing the best methods and technology is key to any successful project management environment. Although it is true that social media is one of the most popular new forms to communicate, project management organisations need to be cognizant of both the dangers and benefits that go along with this new technology. Before jumping on the ?Social Media? bandwagon you need to gauge your readiness for successful adoption and make a well-informed decision that is aligned with your business goals and culture.

To help you evaluate your own project management organisation?s alignment with social media tools you should ask yourself the following questions:

1. Are you ready to develop a social media strategy?

Unlike other collaboration tools, social media tools require a strategic plan that will ensure that you can maximise its benefits of increasing productivity and avoid its danger of sharing the wrong information with the wrong project stakeholders. For this very reason alone, developing a social media plan can mean the difference between improving customer engagement and hurting existing customer relationships.

2. What types of projects are you managing?

Depending on the nature of your typical projects social media tools can create pollution that will hurt progress. For example, highly sensitive projects that requires the selective sharing of information among stakeholders should employ a more closed network and controlled flow of information that is in direct contradiction to the more transparent and fluid information exchange resulting from social media technology.

3. Is your industry and people in line with the benefits of social media?

Certain industries can greatly benefit from social media technology while others will discover that its misaligned with their business. For example, new product development and marketing groups can leverage the benefits of better visibility and knowledge sharing, while the legal industry may discover that the unstructured natured of information capture by social media can hurt their processes.

4. Would you classify your organisation as early adopters of technology?

Organisations need to gauge their readiness for progressive technology offered up by social media. If the business is resistant to adopt new technology the chances for success will be slim.

5. Do you currently use any social media tools for projects?

The informal use of social media tools is typically a good indicator that your organisation will successfully embrace a Social PPM strategy that is in line with your current collaboration tools.

6. Do you encourage transparency with project information?

Social media tools inherently encourage the transparency in sharing information. When implementing a Social PPM strategy an organisation needs to be selective in integrating the best social media tools that will reveal the right information to the right stakeholders.

7. Do you work with dispersed and remote project teams? Are mobile devices integral to your project workforce?

Organisations with decentralised project teams that regularly collaborate and work from multiple locations can quickly benefit from the ?on the go? nature delivered by social media tools designed to be access via multiple mobile platforms.

8. How effective is your current collaboration platform?

As the expression goes, ?If it ain?t broke, don?t fix it.? It is important to evaluate how well your current collaboration and communication platform is functioning. If you are seeking room for improvement, by all means investigate what social media can offer your organisation. However, the introduction of new tools may introduce new problems. It is critical to assess the risk versus reward of social media and how it will ultimately impact your business as a whole.

9. Is collaborative document sharing mature in your organisation?

Prior to adopting the latest collaboration tools offered up by social media, it is critical to assess your current collaboration platform. In a project-centric environment social media tools are more effective when they are able to enhance an already existent collaboration environment that delivers robust web and document management capabilities to its current workforce.

10. Is your project organisation resistant to change?

With the introduction of any new process or technology the change management question cannot be ignored. Including a change management component as part of the Social PPM strategy can mean the difference between the smooth adoption and a painful rejection of the new tool sets.

Obama assails Romney in bid for women's vote

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Seeking to shore up his support among women voters, President Barack Obama on Thursday hammered Republican rival Mitt Romney anew over his backing of Richard Mourdock, the Indiana Senate candidate drawing fire for saying that pregnancies that result from rape are "something God intended."

"Unlike some other leaders in the Republican Party, like John McCain, Mitt Romney hasn't questioned his endorsement of Richard Mourdock or ever once stood up to the most extreme elements of his own party. Instead, he tapes ads for them," Obama's campaign says in an online video. His aides haven't ruled out the possibility of using a similar message in TV ads in battleground states in the coming days as the president looks to break open a race national polls show is close.

While a Romney campaign aide has said he disagreed with Mourdock's remark, the Republican presidential nominee is standing by Mourdock and hasn't asked the Indiana state treasurer to take down a TV ad Romney filmed for him earlier this week.

Beyond the statement from an aide, the Republican nominee and his aides have worked to avoid the subject. Romney did not speak to reporters or address Mourdock's remarks during two public appearances Wednesday. His aides sometimes speak to reporters traveling on Romney's campaign plane but did not appear Wednesday, and were scarce at Romney's rallies. They ignored repeated emailed questions about Mourdock.

Made in a debate Tuesday with Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly, Mourdock's comment thrust a contentious social issue back into the presidential race less than two weeks before Election Day and with early voting underway in many states.

National polls show the race is close, though Romney is struggling to overtake Obama in the state-by-state march to racking up the 270 Electoral College votes needed for victory. Romney has far fewer paths to reaching that threshold than Obama, who starts with more states ? and more Electoral College votes ? in his win column. The race is centered on just nine states, where polls show competitive races: Ohio, Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, Nevada and Wisconsin.

In several of those states, women voters hold the key.

After trailing Obama for months among women voters, Romney has started gaining ground in recent weeks. A new Associated Press-GfK poll released Thursday shows that Romney has erased Obama's 16-point advantage among women, while the president, in turn, has largely eliminated Romney's edge among men.

Obama aides see Romney's refusal thus far to pull his support for Mourdock as an opportunity to cast the GOP nominee as extreme on women's health issues and expose what they say is Romney's attempts to moderate those views for political gain.

On "The Tonight Show" Wednesday, Obama criticized Mourdock for his comments, saying "rape is rape" and distinctions offered by the Republican candidate "don't make any sense to me."

Obama was campaigning with all the signs that his presidency is on the line, crossing the country Wednesday with rallies in Iowa, Colorado and Nevada and appearing on the "The Tonight Show" in California. On Thursday, Obama was so not much starting his day as continuing his last one. After spending the night on Air Force One, he was campaigning in Tampa, Fla., Richmond, Va., and Cleveland before heading back to the White House.

Shortly after 7 a.m. and less than five hours after his day ended in Las Vegas, Obama was at a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop near downtown Tampa, and minutes later he delivered the still warm doughnuts to a firehouse in Tampa. He said he wanted to come by early ? noting he is not often out this early ? to say thank you for all they did.

Obama's campaign also announced joint rallies Monday with Bill Clinton in Orlando, Fla., Youngstown, Ohio, and Prince William County, Va. The president also picked up an endorsement from former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican who supported Obama in 2008. Powell praised Obama's handling of the economic recovery, telling "CBS This Morning," ''I think we've begun to come out of the dive and we're gaining attitude."

Later Thursday, in his hometown of Chicago, Obama was scheduled to be the first president to vote early in person. By making a special trip just to cast his vote, Obama sought to build awareness about the early voting option, which is a vital part of both campaigns' political operations.

The nonstop travels were the busiest single stretch of Obama's long and combative run for a second term.

Romney was waking up in Cincinnati to kick off a daylong swing through three Ohio towns, sharpening his focus on a state that's critical to his hopes of winning the White House. The Republican's advisers say their internal data has him tied to win the state's 18 electoral college votes, but public polling has shown Obama with a slim lead.

Romney is working to cast Obama's campaign as focused on small issues while the Republican ticket is focused on fixing the nation's serious fiscal problems.

"His campaign seems to be smaller and smaller by the day," Romney told more than 2,000 people in an airplane hangar off the tarmac in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, his campaign plane looming behind him. "Attacking me is not an agenda for the future."

He campaigned in Iowa hours after Obama, who had stopped in the state earlier in the day.

Romney's stop was brief; less than an hour after landing Romney was en route to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he spent the night.

Isolation of Puerto Rico's manatees affects survival odds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? New evidence shows there is no cross-breeding between endangered manatees in Puerto Rico and those in Florida, resulting in less genetic diversity in Puerto Rico's small manatee population and impacting its odds of survival.

The findings, which come from a study of West Indian manatees by the U.S. Geological Survey and Puerto Rico Manatee Conservation Center, could help resource managers make decisions about how to conserve the endangered marine mammal.

"Wildlife management has been one of the fields to benefit greatly from the ability to determine relatedness of individuals from DNA analysis, allowing management decisions to be based on concrete scientific evidence for genetic diversity and prospects for it to increase," said USGS Director Marcia McNutt. "These results for Puerto Rico's manatees are a wake-up call."

One key management concern is the ability of Puerto Rico's manatees to absorb and rebound from population declines. Current estimates suggest as few as 250 individual manatees may currently live in Puerto Rico. Furthermore, the population's genetic diversity is low, a fact which decreases a wildlife population's capacity to adapt to changing conditions and rebound after critical events that can cause deaths, such as hurricanes, boat strikes, or disease.

This latest finding -- that Puerto Rico's manatees are genetically isolated -- shows the population's vulnerability to future ups and downs is not being offset by migration from Florida manatees, as was once hoped.

"Puerto Rico's Antillean manatees have low overall numbers and low genetic diversity, both of which present risks for the population's long-term survival," said Margaret Hunter, Ph.D., a USGS geneticist and lead author of the study. "The lack of gene flow is another risk factor. We detected no signs that the Puerto Rico population is being supplemented by Florida manatees, through migration or breeding. This means that Puerto Rico's population must absorb shocks -- such as environmental change or disease -- on their own. It's a trifecta of genetic vulnerability."

In their most recent 5-year review, released in 2007, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommended that West Indian manatees be downlisted from endangered to threatened, although no decision was made at that time.

As of the last status review, it was difficult to determine whether the two populations were mixing. Puerto Rico's manatees were already considered a different subspecies -- the 'Antillean' subspecies, while those in the continental U.S. are the 'Florida' subspecies. Although the distinction had been based on different physical traits observed in the two types of manatees, this study confirms that there is indeed a strong genetic basis to those differences.

The research offers a clearer picture of breeding relationships because the research team compared Florida and Puerto Rico using nuclear DNA, which provides enough granular detail about diversity to draw conclusions about current breeding rates. Earlier genetic data on West Indian manatees came from analysis of mitochondrial DNA, a type of genetic material typically used to understand a species' ancient migratory past.

Among other findings in the study is the existence of two manatee populations within Puerto Rico itself that do not frequently interbreed. The two genetically different groups provide diversity that may improve the long-term prospects for manatees in Puerto Rico.

"This study provides solid data that allows us to better understand what Puerto Rico's manatee population faces internally to survive?both as individuals and as a population. It also directs us in developing and implementing future studies in health assessments and habitat use that will enhance current conservation efforts in the island on behalf of the species," said co-author Antonio Mignucci, Ph.D., director of the Puerto Rico Manatee Conservation Center and research professor at Inter American University of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico's manatees are not only isolated from Florida's population, but have little chance of receiving migrants from other nearby islands. The USGS has been working with the PRMCC and other biologists in Caribbean nations to gather new data about causes of death, habitat use, and breeding among manatees found on the surrounding islands. At this point, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are believed to have small manatee populations while Guadeloupe, Haiti and the Virgin Islands have no known manatees.

"The more that we continue to learn about this unique mammal, the better we can enable managers to make decisions that ensure adequate protection," said Bob Bonde, Ph.D., a USGS research biologist and co-author of the research.

The study, "Puerto Rico and Florida manatees represent genetically distinct groups," is available online in the journal Conservation Genetics.

Killer executed over ice-pick slaying

By Reuters

AUSTIN, Texas - A man who repeatedly stabbed a neighbor with an ice pick and strangled her with stereo wire was executed Wednesday, Texas officials said.

Bobby Lee Hines, who was aged 19 at the time of the 1991 killing, was sharing a next-door apartment with a maintenance worker who had master keys to all the units in the Dallas-area building, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Hours after neighbors heard screaming and other loud noises coming from the apartment of Michelle Wendy Haupt, 26, her body was found just inside the door of her unit, covered with about 18 puncture wounds, according to a summary of the case from the Texas attorney general's office.

Hines' fingerprint and bloody palm print were found in the apartment. Haupt's gold sand-dollar charm was found in Hines' pocket.

Hines was put to death by lethal injection at a state prison in Huntsville, Texas. He was pronounced dead at 6:28 p.m. local time, said Jason Clark, a spokesman for the criminal justice department.

Hines, 40, was the 11th person executed this year in Texas and the 33rd in the United States.

'It was wrong'
In his final statement, Hines asked Haupt's family for forgiveness, according to a copy of the statement provided by Clark.

"To the victim's family, I am sure I know that I took somebody special from y'all," Hines said. "I know it wasn't right, it was wrong."

He also said that God has forgiven him and that being locked up for the rest of his life would have been more of a punishment.

"I wish there was some other way to show I'm sorry," he said.

Hines' execution was scheduled for earlier this year, but it was postponed so that DNA testing could be conducted on fingernail clippings collected from Haupt's body. The testing did not exclude Hines as a source of the DNA, according to the attorney general's office.
