Why You Need To Build Multiple Streams of Income For Yourself ...

Everyday, hundreds of people all over the world join up with network marketing opportunities online, hoping to make riches, but often the opportunity that they join up with is closed down within a few short months. This is one of the main reasons that online entrepreneurs need to focus on building sustainable and long term residual incomes for themselves.

Problem is most internet marketers join every opportunity that comes their way, and then never actually make anything much in any of them. The reason is that they don't treat one opportunity like a business and work on that particular opportunity until they are actually in profit. Instead they try for a little while with one and then join up with the next best thing that comes around.

The secret to success is working your part time job just as hard as you would your full time job for at least six months or until you are in profit. Only after you have done this will you see whether or not the business will work out for you or not.

The other problem that many face is that they do all the above and then the company closes their doors just when you do start earning yourself a nice little income. Overnight, poof, their earnings have gone.

Okay, we all know that internet marketing is hard work and always will be. Only once you have in disposable income in your hands, can you make your money work for you and afford yourself more time to live your life. It will be hard work until then, building up your business and learning all there is about driving traffic to your program.

Here are some things to look out for before joining up with any MLM or Internet Marketing Business and what you can do to sustain your income:

1. When you find something that appeals to you, Google it and see what others have to say.

2. Try not to lay out any money unnecessarily. If possible, make some money first, then reinvest it into your business.

3. If there is a monthly fee involved, which there normally is in any good business, make sure that you will be able to afford the first three months at least, until you have something coming in.

4. Try to join up with opportunities that are either more than two years old, or that help you to build multiple streams of income in more than one different place. In that way if one of the streams collapses, then at least you will have another to sustain you.

5. Build up a good relationship with all the people that you bring into the business. Give your referrals all the help and support that they need, because if they are successful, then in turn your will also be successful.

6. Join up with an online opportunity that you only have to promote one URL and earn multiple streams of income. In this way you can focus your time more productively on promoting one thing instead of trying to promote many different things and thus dilute your advertising power.

7. Make sure that you invest money in a product or service, as there are many pyramid schemes to invest in with nothing to show for it, and these are normally the types of sites that don't last very long.

Network marketing is the wave of the future, as this is one of the only ways that you can build yourself a great residual income. A residual income is money that you are earning without having to put in hours of work each day, the way you would at a regular job. When you get to this stage, you will be able to enjoy your life more and not have to tie yourself to your desk for eight hours a day.

What I've Learned So Far, Part 1

What I\'ve Learned So Far, Part 1

In the past few months, what I?ve learned so far about myself through online marketing is the possibilities are endless. The affiliate, article, and internet businesses are all huge potential income avenues that are filled with additional revenue streams that I have yet to uncover.

My learning curve is steep but not impossible to conquer.

This journey is never boring and is always challenging. I think my blood would stop coursing through its veins, if I didn?t challenge myself to seek out new mountains to conquer. It?s been one heck of a roller coaster ride, to say the least!

The Party?s Not Over Yet

I?ve just begun to tap into the never ending potential of these three income streams and I don?t intend on stopping until I?ve mastered them. That?s my tentative plan, anyway.

The internet has leveled the playing field for everyday people like myself to earn a living online.

I don?t want to give the impression that this ride is completely free of cost. If you find ANYONE offering to teach you how to start a business with no money down, run in the opposite direction as fast as you can!

The saying, ?It takes money to make money?, is so true.

I?ve had to make small investments in time and money I hope will reap benefits in the long run. I don't regret it, though. Compared to the cost of attending a college or university for one semester, what I?ve invested so far is miniscule.

Which is a good thing because I?ve learned I?m not cut out to work for someone else year in and year out.

Unlike my Dad, who was employed for almost 30 years for the same company, the thought of doing that breaks me out in hives.

One painful experience I?ve learned is to always backup the content of my site. A week ago, I accidentally deleted it and the few articles and videos I posted are gone (Ay, Chihuahua!). I could just kick myself for not backing up my site.

But lesson learned. As soon as I complete a project I?m working on, I?ll continue rebuilding it better than ever.

On Writing

It's something I?ve always enjoyed. Although, I never thought I could write full time and I never imagined there was any possibility of making money doing something I enjoy.

Many types of genres, topics, and tools to get my writing juices flowing interest me.

But keeping a journal has been one of the primary ways I?ve used to record the events of my life and it really sparked my renewed interest in composition in the past couple of years.

It never felt like a chore because I was pouring my heart onto paper. In good times or in bad, keeping a journal is therapeutic for me and helps me to process my feelings and emotions.

What I?ve learned from expressing myself in a diary is I have a little skill that?s slowly developing in positive ways. This skill has been transferred to other content creation sites that like my body of work enough to publish it. And yes, I?m pleasantly surprised by that discovery!

Don?t misunderstand me.

I?m not trying to pass myself off as the next Maya Angelou or Toni Morrison. Nor do I even consider myself a writer, much less a published author, it?s just what I like to do.

With practice, written communication is something I would love to continue to explore.

I hope you enjoyed reading part 1 of ?What I?ve Learned So Far?. Leave your comments below and tell me what you think about it.

61 Push Ups, in 60 Seconds (Cooler Than You Think) [VIDEO ...

This year, at the tenth annual Anytime Fitness conference (a meetup for franchise owners and employees) one fit-feat stood out amongst all the speakers, awards, and fancy dresses. In the middle of Chicago?s Millennium Park, April Calderon, worked out her arms, chest, abs, hips, and legs for hundreds of spectators. It only took her a minute.

Calderon, who is the general manager of three Anytime Fitness clubs in Central Florida, pressed out 61 pushups? in one minute? balancing on three medicine balls. In case you weren?t counting, that?s more pushups than there are seconds in a minute.

To verify Calderon?s coolness, let us inform you that the 24-year-old has tackled this balancing act before, and it was for charity. Calderon?s September 14th go at the push-ups hasn?t yet been confirmed by The Book of Alternative Records, but if and when it is, she will hold the world record for most pushups completed on 3 medicine balls in 1 minute. She?d be added to the collection of weird, crazy, incredible, and unusual feats of dexterity, endurance, strength, and agility held by the book.

While there?s been a slight uproar over the integrity of the last 20 or so push ups, we?ve got to hand it to Miss Calderon for motivating the crowd and youtube viewers alike. So excuse me while I try to even balance on three unstable medicine balls in our office and not break my schnoz.

What 60-second fit goals do you want to tackle? Tell us in the comment section below or tweet the author @nicmcdermott.

Sony makes Olympus rescue pact official with $645 million investment

Olympus hangs $57 million loss on austerity, strong yen and declining compact camera market

After months of speculation about who would step in to save the scandal-ridden Olympus' rocky fortunes, Sony has finally opened up its checkbook. The two companies are entering into a "business and capital alliance," with Sony pumping in $650 million to its former rival. In exchange, it's gaining a seat on the company's board and a 51 percent stake in a new joint venture based on Olympus's coveted medical imaging tech -- something Kaz Hirai outlined in his "One Sony" strategy. The deal also includes a component-sharing agreement in the photography space, with Olympus mirror cells and camera lenses being given to Sony, while image sensors (where Sony is very strong) will go the other way.

Pa. man makes no bones about buying 2 skeletons

(AP) ? A pair of skeletons for sale at a Pennsylvania auction house went for more than a couple of bones.

A Lancaster County antiques dealer bought both skeletons Tuesday at Tom Hall Auctions in Schnecksville. A male skeleton in a tuxedo went for $900 and his Bible-carrying female counterpart went for $950.

The skeletons are believed to be of German or Irish origin in the late 19th or early 20th century. They each were owned at one point by a New York mortician's museum and the Independent Order of Oddfellows, the likely origin of their accessories.

Auction winner Bill Wood says he bought the skeletons to go along with another he has at Old Mill Antiques, his Strasburg shop. He plans to resell all three.

Somali president, Kenyan FM escape deadly bomb attack

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Somalia's new President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the visiting Kenyan foreign minister on Wednesday escaped an apparent suicide bomb attack on a Mogadishu hotel where they were holding a news conference unscathed, witnesses said.

Somalia's al Shabaab rebels said they had carried out the attack, which killed at least eight people and came just two days after Mohamud was elected in the first presidential vote in Somalia in decades.

Two explosions shook the Somali capital, underscoring the huge security challenges facing Mohamud who came to power in a process that was billed as an historic break with 20 years of violent anarchy.

"We were behind the Mogadishu hotel blasts. It was a well planned Mujahideen operation," Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, a spokesman for al Shabaab's military operation, told Reuters.

A television journalist accompanying Kenyan Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Ongeri said she had seen "pieces of meat flying all over the place" after the first blast.

"Then I saw a second guy shooting as he stormed towards the hotel," said Jamila Mohammed, who was outside the hotel when the assailants struck.

Mohamud's election by Somali lawmakers on Monday was hailed by his supporters as a vote for change in the war-ridden Horn of Africa country that has lacked effective central government since 1991.

Although he is a relatively new face in Somali politics, the former academic faces old problems: a stubborn Islamist insurgency, acrimonious clan politics, rampant corruption and maritime piracy.

"First and foremost we will address the security issue. Priority number one is security and priority number two and priority number three," Mohamud said moments after the blasts.

A Reuters witness said the body of what appeared to be a suicide bomber could be seen outside the hotel. A severed head lay in a large crater in the road.

Al Shabaab - who are al Qaeda-linked militants - said the explosions had killed four members of the government's security forces. A Somali ambulance service worker said they had picked up the bodies of five government soldiers and two civilians.

"I could also see three dead African Union soldiers," the ambulance worker, who declined to be named, said.

The attack targeted the Jazeera Palace hotel which is located near Mogadishu's heavily fortified international airport.

The airport compound is a major base for African Union peacekeepers and the surrounding area is considered one of the safest parts of the coastal city.

On Tuesday, al Shabaab branded Mohamud a "traitor" and vowed to continue their jihad against a government they say serves only Western interests.

Kenya sent troops into Somalia in November to help crush the Islamist insurgency.

"The bomb blasts will change nothing at all. We are determined. We are there for the course and until that course has been achieved," Bogita Ongeri, a spokesman for Kenya Defence Forces, told Reuters.

iOS 6 gets official debut on the iPhone 5

Now that the iPhone 5 is officially out of the bag, it's time to talk software. Apple hasn't exactly kept its cards close to its chest in regards to iOS 6: Cupertino teased the software at WWDC, letting us in on increased Facebook integration, a new map application, Passbook and "Do Not Disturb" in the process. Today the OS gets official, and Scott Forstall demoed the OS running on the iPhone 5 running these features and more.

Not too much new here, but the software is up and in action on the new smartphone. One of the most hyped additions to iOS 6 has been the Maps application, which includes Siri navigation, 3D building view and satellite imagery. In Safari, there's now a full-screen mode and you'll be able to share tabs from your desktop with your phone (dubbed iCloud Tabs). We're also seeing Passbook in action once again, bringing up a plane ticket at the lockscreen when you get to the airport, for example. One new thing here: Delta is confirmed as a partner for this digital ticket service.

As we've already known, on the Siri front you can bring up sports ranking and Rotten Tomatoes movie ratings via the voice assistant. And, of course, one of the most welcome features is FaceTime over cellular -- no mention of whether that will be supported on all carriers, but it certainly looks that way. iOS 6 will be available for download on September 19th (also when the iPhone 5 will go on sale), and it's coming to the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, new iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch.

AP source: NFL has 5-week schedule for officials

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL has devised a temporary five-week schedule for using replacement officials.

A person familiar with the schedule told The Associated Press on Monday that the setup is done through Week 5 of the regular season. The regular officials are locked out and replacements worked the preseason and the first week of the regular season.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not made public officiating schedules.

In early June, the league locked out the officials, who are part-time NFL employees, after their collective bargaining agreement expired. The NFL Referees Association and the league met for three days at the beginning of September before talks collapsed.

The NFL and the union, which covers more than 120 on-field officials, are at odds over salary, retirement benefits and operational issues. The NFL has said its offer includes annual pay increases that could earn an experienced official more than $200,000 annually by 2018. The NFLRA has disputed the value of the proposal, insisting it would ultimately reduce their compensation.

Replacements were used in 2001, but only for one week of the regular season before a deal was reached.

This year's replacements have had some errors, particularly late in Arizona's 20-16 victory over Seattle when the Seahawks were awarded an extra timeout. The officiating crew admitted its mistake after the game.

GAO Slams DHS Over BioWatch Biological Defense System

What you folks aren't realizing is that even though he is dead, bin Laden is still winning this war.

His stated aim was never to be able to beat down the United States in a military or conventional war. Even he knew there was no force outside the United States that could do that. The only way to destroy the United States was to create a set of conditions where it would destroy itself and the best way to do that would be to create havoc in its economy. What's happened since the 9/11 attacks and a few other minor events? The US has taken part in a ongoing military action in several countries in the middle east that have cost it hundreds of billions. It's instituted internal measures to counter "terrorism" on its home soil that have cost more hundreds of billions. In an attempt to make everything seem all right, it fostered a false economic boom that finally crashed and put the country on shaky ground economically. Citizens are now encouraged to report each other if they seem to be acting in a suspicious or covert manner. (Could be they are planning to blow something up. Could be they are planning a surprise birthday party. It doesn't matter, it's all suspicious.) And, because the government doesn't learn from its mistakes, this process just keeps on growing. The US is facing yet another credit cap crisis that either hits the wall and reduces the government and the services it provides drastically or gets elevated again creating an even more likely worse event sometime in the future.

bin Laden is winning and you don't even know it. The measures to counter terrorism have already been mentioned earlier in this thread. Quit considering terrorists as some special class of criminal. Their actions are no different than any other kind of criminal and can be prosecuted under normal criminal law, murder of various degrees, illegal weapons use or movement, false accounting practices to fund their operations. All these things are just normal criminal activities if you remove the stigma of the label terrorist.

The most damning thing about the situation right now is the dichotomy between FEMA and the FBI. FEMA promotes emergency preparedness, stockpiling food, water, other supplies, cash (in case the electronic transaction system fails) while at the same time these actions are labeled by the FBI as indicators that someone is a potential terrorist.

You all best get ready to see the United States break apart into a smaller set of unions or independent countries. The larger entity is just about at the end of its rope. Of course, if you look back you might find that the founding fathers never really considered the United States as being a single country from sea to sea. There were plans to foster an independent sister (or brother, for the patriarchal minded among us) state on the west coast. In hindsight, it might have been a good idea; having someone about who could cuff your ears every once in a while when you start acting stupid.

Will ex-cop Drew Peterson be eaten alive in prison?

This month, a jury found Drew Peterson, a former Illinois police sergeant turned flamboyant criminal, guilty of the 2004 murder of his ex-wife Kathy Savio. Now, hundreds had gathered to celebrate. Dateline NBC's Hoda Kotb reports.

By Andrew Mach, NBC News

As a former police officer, Drew Peterson may have a tougher time behind bars than other inmates, according to prison experts.

But as the one-time ?Police Officer of the Year? awaits sentencing for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, one ex-cop who spent time behind bars says Peterson's brash personality could be at least as big a liability.

?When he gets in there, those people are going to eat him alive. Absolutely,? says Bill Pederson, a former Drug Enforcement Administration officer who served time in prison. ?He?s got such a big ego, and if you go in and you?re cocky, they?re going to wail all over you, and there?s no safe place in prison.?

Peterson, 58, was found guilty of first degree murder of Savio last week, and faces up to 60 years in prison when he is sentenced on Nov. 26. While he is far from the first police officer to be staring down decades behind bars, he is among the most high profile, with his story catalogued in countless TV shows and tabloid magazines.

?[Inmates] know everything. They know your background, what you?ve done, where you work. There are televisions, there are newspapers, and they probably cheered when he was found guilty," said Pederson, who served 15 months in the federal prison in Oxford, Wis., on a 1992 conviction for theft of public records.?

Much of Peterson?s experience will be driven by whether prison officials decide to incarcerate him with the general inmate population or alone in segregation. But making that decision, a board will weigh the pros and cons of both options for Peterson.

?All offenders received by IDOC are evaluated for placement within a facility on a case-by-case basis, based on several factors,? the Illinois Department of Corrections said in a statement regarding Peterson. ?These factors include the nature of offense and the offender?s criminal history as well as any safety and security needs of the offender. When appropriate, an offender?s prior employment may be a factor in determining whether they should be placed in protective housing.?

However, because Peterson has not yet been evaluated by the department, IDOD spokesperson Kayce Ataiyero?told NBC News that there is no way of determining at this time whether he will be housed with or segregated from the general prison population.

But experts say there's a strong likelihood that the prison will err on the side of safety.?

?They?ll take precautions because it is a former law enforcement person who may have dealt with these individuals that may be in there or they have friends or families of people in there,? Frank Bilecki, Cook County (Ill.) Sheriff spokesman, told NBC News. ?You don?t want to put them in harm?s way of being around any of those individuals. My guess is that he?ll be in protective custody and he may have requested that.?

Peterson was kept in segregation at the Will County Adult Detention Center in Joliet, Ill., for the duration of his trial due to the high-profile nature of the case and will continue to stay there until his sentencing.

Former Bolingbrook, Ill., police sergeant Drew Peterson arrives at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet, Ill., for his arraignment on May 8, 2009.

?We have a lot of people here that are in protective custody that didn?t want it,? Bilecki said. ?They wanted to be with the general population but it wasn?t in their best interest or ours. Each case needs to be looked at closely.?

Jeff Shannon, a police officer and psychotherapist in the San Francisco Bay Area, said prison can cause great mental strain for former officers.

?When a person who has a super strong identity as a police officer goes from a position in society that he is very proud of and that he earned to all of the sudden being in handcuffs in the back of a police car and in jail, it becomes a psychological crisis,? Shannon said.

Shannon, however, believes Peterson?s brash public demeanor might actually help him in prison.

?You don?t want to appear to be a victim, and if you hold yourself in a confident manner, physically, and you?re assertive and tough, you?re going to fare better than if you walked in and you don?t know what you?re doing.?

Stay informed with the latest headlines; sign up for our newsletter? ?

Additionally, Shannon says, as a seasoned police officer, there?s no denying Peterson?s awareness and understanding of the prison system.

?Officers spend their entire careers dealing with people in prison,? Shannon said. ?They?re familiar with how they think and how to communicate with inmates. There?s this whole kind of lingo that he?ll be comfortable with that will serve him well in prison.?

Peterson began working with the Bolingbrook, Ill., Police Department in 1977. He served on the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad, and he was named ?Police Officer of the Year? in 1979 by the department.

Peterson was fired in 1985 from the Bolingbrook Police Department after a board of police and fire commissioners found him guilty of disobedience, conducting a self-assigned investigation, failure to report a bribe immediately, and official misconduct. Indictments alleged he solicited drugs in exchange for information. The charges were later dropped and he won reinstatement with the department in 1986.

The murder trial for Peterson began years after Savio, 40, was found dead in her dry bathtub on March 1, 2004. Her death was initially ruled an accidental drowning, but investigators reclassified it as a homicide after Peterson's 23-year-old wife, Stacy Peterson, went missing. Peterson was indicted on May 7, 2009 by the Will county Grand Jury and arrested for the murder of Savio. Stacy Peterson has not yet been found.?

If he winds up being charged with a crime in Stacy's disappearance, Peterson could face even more time behind bars.

?I don?t think that just because you?re the police, you?re in danger,? said Pederson, the ex-DEA agent. ?There might be some froggy guys in there who say I?m going to get the copper, but for the majority of the inmates, it will depend on how he conducts himself in there, not because of what his job was out here.?

"Wherever he?s going, police would have been there before," Pederson said. "It?s not that unique of a situation. But he?s got to start eating some humble pie."

Psychopathic boldness tied to U.S. presidential success

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? The fearless dominance associated with psychopathy may be an important predictor of U.S. presidential performance, suggests an analysis published this week in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

"Certain psychopathic traits may be like a double-edged sword," says lead author Scott Lilienfeld, a psychologist at Emory University. "Fearless dominance, for example, may contribute to reckless criminality and violence, or to skillful leadership in the face of a crisis."

In fact, fearless dominance, linked to low social and physical apprehensiveness, appears to correlate with better-rated presidential performance for leadership, persuasiveness, crisis management and Congressional relations, the analysis showed.

Theodore Roosevelt ranked highest in fearless dominance, followed by John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Rutherford Hayes, Zachary Taylor, Bill Clinton, Martin Van Buren, Andrew Jackson and George W. Bush.

The analysis drew upon personality assessments of 42 presidents, up to George W. Bush, compiled by Steven Rubenzer and Thomas Faschingbauer for their book "Personality, Character and Leadership in the White House." More than 100 experts, including biographers, journalists and scholars who are established authorities on one or more U.S. presidents, evaluated their target presidents using standardized psychological measures of personality, intelligence and behavior.

For rankings on various aspects of job performance, the analysis relied primarily on data from two large surveys of presidential historians: One conducted by C-SPAN in 2009 and a second conducted by Siena College in 2010.

The rich historical data on presidents, combined with detailed expert rankings, provided a window into an emerging theory that some aspects of psychopathy may actually be positive adaptations in certain social situations.

"The way many people think about mental illness is too cut-and-dried," Lilienfeld says. "Certainly, full-blown psychopathy is maladaptive and undesirable. But what makes the psychopathic personality so interesting is that it's not defined by a single trait, but a constellation of traits."

A clinical psychopath encompasses myriad characteristics, such as fearless social dominance, self-centered impulsivity, superficial charm, guiltlessness, callousness, dishonesty and immunity to anxiety. Each of these traits lies along a continuum, and all individuals may exhibit one of more of these traits to some degree.

"You can think of it like height and weight," Lilienfeld explains. "Everyone has some degree of both, and they're continuously distributed in the population."

The results of the analysis raise the possibility that the boldness often associated with psychopathy may confer advantages over a variety of occupations involving power and prestige, from politics to business, law, athletics and the military.

The findings also add to the debate over the idea of the so-called "successful psychopath," an individual with psychopathic traits who rises to a position of power in the workplace.

"We believe more research is needed into the implications of boldness for leadership in general," Lilienfeld says.

The analysis found that the link between fearless dominance and political performance was linear, Lilienfeld notes, but he added that at the extremes, boldness might veer into a form of recklessness that would be detrimental.

The researchers also looked at presidential scores for self-centered impulsivity, which in contrast to boldness, was linked to some negative job performance indicators, including Congressional impeachment resolutions, tolerating unethical behavior in subordinates and negative character.

Theodore Roosevelt, for instance, ranked the highest for fearless dominance, but lower than average for self-centered impulsivity, suggesting that he was far from being psychopathic.

Lyndon Johnson, however, ranked relatively high for fearless dominance (15th) and was among the top-five scorers for self-centered impulsivity. "That's consistent with what we know about Johnson," Lilienfeld says. "He was a very dominant, socially bold person, at times even ruthless about getting his way. In some sense, these traits may have made him an effective leader, able to push through civil rights legislation, but they may not have been so positive in terms of personal relationships."

Other co-authors of the analysis include Emory psychologist Irwin Waldman, former graduate student Kristin Landfield, and Ashley Watts, now a first-year graduate student in Emory's clinical psychology program.

Increase in metal concentrations in Rocky Mountain watershed tied to warming temperatures

ScienceDaily (Sep. 9, 2012) ? Warmer air temperatures since the 1980s may explain significant increases in zinc and other metal concentrations of ecological concern in a Rocky Mountain watershed, reports a new study led by the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Colorado Boulder.

Rising concentrations of zinc and other metals in the upper Snake River just west of the Continental Divide near Keystone, Colo., may be the result of falling water tables, melting permafrost and accelerating mineral weathering rates, all driven by warmer air temperatures in the watershed. Researchers observed a fourfold increase in dissolved zinc over the last 30 years during the month of September.

Increases in metals were seen in other months as well, with lesser increases seen during the high-flow snowmelt period. During the study period, local mean annual and mean summer air temperatures increased at a rate of 0.5 to 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit per decade.

Generally, high concentrations of dissolved metals in the Snake River watershed are primarily the result of acid rock drainage, or ARD, formed by natural weathering of pyrite and other metal-rich sulfide minerals in the bedrock. Weathering of pyrite forms sulfuric acid through a series of chemical reactions, and pulls metals like zinc from minerals in the rock and carries these metals into streams.

Increased sulfate and calcium concentrations observed over the study period lend weight to the hypothesis that the increased zinc concentrations are due to acceleration of pyrite weathering. The potential for comparable increases in metals in similar Western watersheds is a concern because of impacts on water resources, fisheries and stream ecosystems. Trout populations in the lower Snake River, for example, appear to be limited by the metal concentrations in the water, said USGS research biologist Andrew Todd, lead researcher on the project.

"Acid rock drainage is a significant water quality problem facing much of the Western United States," Todd said. "It is now clear that we need to better understand the relationship between climate and ARD as we consider the management of these watersheds moving forward."

Warmer temperatures and earlier snowmelt runoff have been observed throughout mountainous areas of the western United States where ARD is common, but it is not known if these changes have triggered rising acidity and metal concentrations in other "mineralized" watersheds because of lack of comparable monitoring data, according to the research team.

CU-Boulder Professor Diane McKnight, a collaborator on the project, has generated much of the upper Snake River data through research projects conducted with her students since the mid-1990s. McKnight said students in her environmental engineering and environmental studies classes like Caitlin Crouch -- a study co-author who received her master's degree under McKnight -- are highly motivated to understand ARD problems.

"Students can see that their research will have direct applications to addressing a critical issue for Colorado," said McKnight, professor in the civil, environmental and architectural engineering department and a fellow in CU's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research.

In cases where ARD is linked directly with past and present mining activities it is called acid mine drainage, or AMD. Another Snake River tributary, Peru Creek, is largely devoid of life due to AMD generated from the abandoned Pennsylvania Mine and smaller mines upstream and has become a target for potential remediation efforts.

The Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety, in conjunction with other local, state and federal partners, is conducting underground exploration work at the mine to investigate the sources of heavy metals-laden water draining from the mine entrance. The new study by Todd and colleagues has important implications in such mine cleanup efforts because it suggests that establishing attainable cleanup objectives could be difficult if natural background metal concentrations are a "moving target."

A study on the subject was published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology. Other collaborators include Andrew Manning and Philip Verplanck of USGS. The data analyzed for the study came from INSTAAR, the USGS and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

(AP) ? A Tulane University doctor says it is not yet clear if a football player who suffered a spinal injury while making a tackle will be paralyzed.

Dr. Greg Stewart, Tulane's director of sports medicine, says the full extent of Devon Walker's injury may not become clear until midweek.

Stewart says doctors do not yet know what the long-term implications and outcomes of Walker's injury will be.

The doctor says he was with Walker on the field, in the ambulance and at the hospital on Saturday. He says Walker was put into a cervical collar and couldn't see much of what was happening, so Stewart explained what was going on.

Stewart says Walker was talking with doctors as he was being treated.

US Open men's final moved to Monday again

NEW YORK (AP) ? With a potentially dangerous storm bearing down on the U.S. Open, play was suspended in the first set of defending champion Novak Djokovic's semifinal Saturday, making this the fifth consecutive year the tournament will fail to finish on time because of the weather.

Djokovic was trailing fourth-seeded David Ferrer 5-2 after about a half-hour of action when tournament referee Brian Earley came out on court and told the players and the chair umpire that they needed to stop.

As some spectators at Arthur Ashe Stadium booed or whistled, an announcement over the loudspeakers said: "At this time, we ask you to please make your way out of the stadium in an orderly fashion."

That match, which will determine who faces Olympic champion Andy Murray in the final, was scheduled to resume Sunday at 11 a.m. EDT. The men's final was shifted from its originally scheduled Sunday slot to Monday ? something that has happened at every U.S. Open since 2008.

"I would say we're getting very tired of having Monday finals," tournament director David Brewer said.

The women's final between Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka that was supposed to be played Saturday night was shifted to Sunday at 4:30 p.m. It's the fourth time in the last five years the women's title match was rescheduled.

Unlike at Wimbledon and the Australian Open, the U.S. Open does not have a roof to protect any court used for tournament matches. It's also the only Grand Slam tournament that schedules two men's semifinals on Saturday, which leaves less room for scheduling flexibility when there is disruptive weather.

Next year, for the first time, a day off will be inserted between the semifinals and final, either by shifting the semis to Friday or by changing the title match to Monday.

Brewer said he did consider moving the Ferrer-Djokovic match to another court and playing it at the same time as Murray-Berdych, but "we thought the only way to go was to keep them back-to-back" in Ashe out of deference to ticket-holders, TV partners and viewers around the world.

There was a rain delay of more than an hour Saturday morning, delaying the start of Murray's 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (7) victory over Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the opening semifinal. At least they got to finish, even if it meant dealing with 20 mph wind that blew a changeover chair onto the court on one point and yanked Murray's hat off during another.

"I'm surprised it didn't happen more," Murray said. "It was so, so windy."

In the end, he navigated his way into his fifth Grand Slam final.

Now he'll try to win his first Grand Slam title ? and first for any British man in 76 years.

"It was brutal," Murray said about the conditions during his 3-hour, 58-minute victory. "Hard to describe. You had to focus for every single point. ... Some of the hardest conditions I've ever played in, for sure, and I come from Scotland, so that's saying something."

This major tournament is the first since the 2004 French Open with neither Roger Federer nor Rafael Nadal in the semifinals. Federer was beaten by Berdych in the quarterfinals, while Nadal did not enter the field, sidelined by a partially torn tendon in his left knee.

Federer, Nadal and Djokovic have combined to win 29 of the last 30 major titles, a stretch that began at the 2005 French Open.

The third-seeded Murray will get yet another chance to put his name on that list. The last major singles trophies for a British man were won by Fred Perry at Wimbledon and the U.S. Championships in 1936.

Murray also played in the 2008 final at the U.S. Open, losing to Federer.

"I'm obviously a lot more mature," Murray said at a news conference interrupted by appearances from actor Sean Connery and Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, who also are Scottish. "I have had a lot more experience in these sort of situations than obviously then. It was my first Slam final."

Murray is playing confidently after beating Federer to win a gold medal for Britain at the London Games in August, about a month after losing to Federer in the Wimbledon final.

He also appeared in the final at the Australian Open in 2010 and 2011, settling for runner-up status each time. Only one other man in tennis history was defeated in his first four major finals ? Ivan Lendl, who just so happens to be Murray's coach and was on hand Saturday.

While eliminating Federer on Wednesday, 2010 Wimbledon runner-up Berdych pounded his flat forehands right where he wanted them and made a total of 21 unforced errors in four sets. Bothered by the swirling air Saturday, the sixth-seeded Berdych nearly eclipsed that in the opening set alone, with 19, and finished with 64 unforced errors. Murray only made 20.

"I don't see any reason that my game would just crash" other than the tough-to-handle wind, Berdych said. "It was something (that) really (affected) my game. But that's how it is."

Berdych wondered aloud whether there should be a rule in place to prevent matches from being played when the wind is as much of a factor as it was Saturday.

As Murray hit a serve to start the second set's last game, his changeover chair was blown over by a gust and, like tumbleweed, rolled onto the blue court, spilling all sorts of other items, too ? racket bag, white towel, etc.

A let was called, canceling the point, and both players smiled at the chaos. Murray held there to even the match at a set apiece.

Another strong burst knocked the 6-foot-5 Berdych off-balance as he was about to serve to begin the third, and he wound up getting broken at love.

Berdych repeatedly found simply launching a ball overhead for his service toss problematic, often letting it drop to the court without taking a swing. When he did actually serve, there still were plenty of issues, including six double-faults.

"There is not a player who likes these conditions, but there are some players that these kind of conditions can suit to their game a bit better than the other ones," Berdych said. "That's the difference. ... Andy was better in this part definitely, and that's why he actually took the win."

With Murray facing a break point in the fourth game, he raced forward and a combination of his momentum and the wind pulled his white baseball cap off as he made contact with the ball. At the other end, Berdych failed to get to Murray's response, and chair umpire Pascal Maria initially awarded the point to Murray, making the score deuce.

But Berdych argued he was distracted by the hat. Murray approached and asked Berdych whether he was certain the hat affected the point.

"I'm just asking if you're 100 percent sure," Murray repeated.

That show of sportsmanship led to Maria's ruling that the point should be replayed. Murray tried to chip a lob that landed long, and Berdych got the point ? and the break.

Murray hit a ball in anger, grabbed the troublesome hat and walked to dump it on the sideline, muttering "nonsense, nonsense, nonsense." He looked or sounded disgruntled at other times, including when he tugged the two legs of his dark shorts up to his waist.

Ballkids scurried to collect items tossed about by the air, from paper napkins to plastic bags and various other debris. And through it all, both players were forced to adjust to swerving shots made tricky by the wind, recalibrating at the last possible second. Murray, certainly, was more capable of doing just that, and he used all sorts of slices and spins, dinks and dunks, to frustrate Berdych.

"You have to get yourself in the right position for every shot," Murray said. "The ball sometimes stops moving and goes the other way."
