Q&A: What is the most secure way to invest in gold? | Gold ...
Question by Sunny McBubbles: What is the most secure way to invest in gold?
Keeping gold yourself is a risk to theft and you can?t always trust a bank? What?s the best way?
I?m preparing for a total economic collapse.
Also, which is better to invest in before a depression, gold or silver?
Best answer:
you will find it pretty much impossible to ?keep gold yourself? however you will be able to buy it while it remains in a vault. ask your stockbroker (or if you dont have one set up an internet trading account). buy the necessary bonds from the right market. gold will have more room to fall than silver, but a lot more to bounce back up again as well.

As we approach the new millenium, technology ? and its use in schools ? continues to evolve
? 1998 Gary S. Stager
Published in Upgrade, The Magazine of the Software Publisher?s Association
As the cost of computing decreases rapidly, children continue to enjoy increasing access to computers and the Internet . However, lower cost is not the only trend in learning with computers and communications technology. A few of the trends may seem quite obvious. Others are more provocative and will change the nature of teaching, learning and software development. The trends include:
- Lower cost hardware and software
- The locus of technological innovation shifting from school to home
- The Internet
- A sea-change from software predicated on passive instruction and entertainment to an expectation to use computers as vehicles for intellectual construction
- Miniaturization/Mobility
Many of these trends are interdependent and support one another. The overlap reinforces the changes taking place.
Lower cost hardware and software
Moore?s Law continues to hold and the educational promise of the Internet has caused millions of new computers to be purchased by families, while schools rush to ?get wired.? There is an enormous demand for sub-$1,000 computers and the success of Apple?s iMac provide evidence of the increasing availability of low-cost, powerful, ?Internet-ready? computers. The couple of years will see computers approach the price of a few pairs of Air Jordans.
This phenomena will cause more homes to own personal computers and allow for more telecommuting and learning outside of school than has been possible in the past. Schools will find that the level of access demanded by students, coupled with reduction in cost of computing will have a profound impact on the nature of teaching and learning. At the simplest level, ubiquitous computing will move computers out of specialized labs and in contact with every aspect of schooling.
Equity will improve as the cost of computer ownership drops. Several studies already conclude that socioeconomic status no longer determines a child?s level of computer literacy ? at least the modest level desired by traditional school computing curricula.
Increased access to powerful, less expensive technology is also creating new ways of learning and expressing oneself. MIDI keyboards and software allow fifth graders to compose and perform original musicals while $50 drawing tablets and digital cameras provide children with new palettes for expressing their artistic talents. Such technology is welcome news in an age where art and music education is in serious jeopardy.
Challenges to the profitability of the software industry
One concern for software developers is the public?s demand for products with higher production values at lower prices. Many customers no longer perceive the value of software priced at $499, but they don?t understand why it costs forty-nine dollars when a home video of Titanic costs $9.95.
Whether due to high-volume licensing or the availability of increasingly powerful shareware/freeware on the web, the price of software increasingly approaches zero.
The home
Increasing access to powerful computers, expressive software and the Internet has shifted the locus of technological innovation from school to the home. There is no way for schools to catch-up. They are likely to have less powerful computers and connectivity than some of their students have at home. This presents educators with a challenge and opportunity to view the home more as a learning resource than a place where kids do trivial homework assignments and stop learning until they return to school.
While parents will continue to purchase software designed to drill their children in specific skills, kids are likely to ignore these tasks in favor of controlling the computer to achieve more personal and complex objectives. Just as shooting down math problems are less interesting to kids than ?surfing or chatting,? making things to share with the world will consume more computer time.
The net
Much has been said about how the Internet offers learners of all ages with unprecedented access to information. This fact alone has revolutionized learning, however the greatest impact of the net lies in its ability to democratize publishing and expand opportunities for collaboration.
While schools assimilate the Internet by using it as a way to find discrete facts or deliver information to sometimes unwilling students, kids at home are beginning to use their personal computers to create web sites, collaborate in online communities of practice and express themselves in new ways. This should come as no surprise as schools struggle against the clock, irrational fear of Internet abduction and the institutional expense of providing students with sufficient access. The home provides learners with a level of freedom, contemplative time and computer access necessary to construct knowledge.
Even when schools begin to discuss online learning, the reflexive response is to scan everything they have ever used in a traditional classroom in preparation for ?pouring the information down the pipe? and into the computer of the online students. A ?push? mentality permeates the discussion, rather than viewing learning as the act of ?pulling and shaping understanding? in the mind of each individual learner. You can lead a school to the I-Way, but you can?t make it think.
The Concord Consortium (http://www.concord.org) is dedicated to creating rich online environments for learning math and science by doing. Their collaborative projects include Haze-Span, a project in which children are collecting and analyzing important scientific data and sharing that data with interested scientists, and the Virtual High School in which students explore areas of mathematics and science in ways beyond the school curriculum.
Pepperdine University (http://gsep.pepperdine.edu/online/) is perhaps the first university to offer accredited online graduate programs in educational technology, based on constructionist principles of learning. Educators enrolled in the Pepperdine master?s and doctoral programs use a combination of synchronous and asynchronous technologies to build community and construct knowledge within a personal context. Guest speakers, faculty members and even other classes of students join discussions of powerful ideas in virtual settings in which every member of the community is a learner. Access to classmates and faculty members is available virtually around the clock. Pepperdine is working to invent the future of learning and teaching without relying on an old correspondence school model.
Mamamedia (http://www.mamamedia.com) is a unique Internet start-up designed to provide children with a safe, creative and intellectually stimulating place on the web. Mamamedia extends the traditional notion of the 3-Rs, by adding the three Xs, ?Exploration, Expression and Exchange? as the design philosophy of their site. Mamamedia founder Idit Harel?s goal is to ?sell learning to kids? in an environment they will wish to return to over and over again. Anything children can use may also be collected, created or manipulated by the child. The future development of the net has to not only include faster bit delivery, but greater opportunities for users to construct things online.
Educast (http://www.educast.com/) provides educators with a free screensaver that is updated with timely news, views, resources and teaching ideas based on a push technology similar to Point-Cast. The system is optimized to make the best of slow or infrequent net connections.
Every Internet user is depending on software and hardware engineers to increase bandwidth and more intuitive tools for web publishing. Web design still requires too much ?monkey work? and ?two percent? of users understand the process of uploading a page to a web server.
Learners of all ages have the unprecedented opportunity to not only ?look things up,? but use the Internet to publish their ideas in all sorts of ways ? from dancing poetry, special-interest groups and TV/radio broadcasts. The web is full of places where you can publish your work for free and powerful tools for expressing your ideas. As the courts and educators are discovering, school know longer has sole jurisdiction over what goes on in a kids? bedroom, personal computer or head. For an increasing number of kids, ?high-tech means my tech.? (Idit Harel)
From passive to constructive computing
Recent research demonstrates that computer use is most effective for learning when students use it to ?problem solve.? Inside and outside of school, the thing computers do best is provide learners with an intellectual laboratory and vehicle for self expression. Children need better, more open-ended, computationally rich tools than their parents in order to sustain their interest and leverage the potential of computers for making connections between powerful ideas.
Five year-olds ought to be able to see themselves as software developers by using MicroWorlds to design a video game. Children should be able to collect data, perform experiments and discuss their conclusions with other children and experts. Kids who build and program LEGO robots may use physics, measurement, feedback and perhaps even calculus in a meaningful context. Seymour Papert and others point out that children who have had such deep learning experiences will demand much more of school.
Miniaturization and mobility
Computers are not only getting cheaper and more powerful, they are getting smaller. I have enjoyed working with Australian schools in which every child has a laptop for more than eight years. Approximately 50,000 Australian children have had personal laptop computers and the number of American school districts embracing truly personal computing is growing as well. The Australian pioneers viewed laptops as a way to make learning more personal and as a catalyst with which teachers could rethink the nature of teaching and learning. The ability to use the computer as your own portable laboratory and studio has had a tremendous impact on the social, cognitive and artistic development of children. Learning can not only occur anytime and anywhere, but new deeper forms of learning have become possible.
Students with laptops need two essentially two pieces of software, an integrated package for doing work and environment for messing about with powerful ideas and learning. This is why so many schools use ClarisWorks or Office for writing, calculating and publishing and MicroWorlds (http://www.microworlds.com) for designing interactive multimedia projects that may be run over the web. The software requirements for laptop schools include: being open-ended, non-grade specific, inexpensive and have a life-span of at least three years. Developers need to begin thinking about how they will distribute and license software to schools in which every student has a personal laptop.
High schools have been embracing low-cost graphing calculators for several years. These devices cost less than one hundred dollars and have been used to help students visualize mathematics that was previously abstract. A new innovation, calculator-based labs (CBL), allows students to connect scientific probes to the graphing calculator and collect experimental data. This data may then be analyzed and shared in ways never before possible. These probes place students in the center of their own learning and enriches mathematics education by making tangible connections to science.
Nicholas Negroponte once joked that we need to ?melt crayolas down into Crays.? He meant that toys would become more and more computationally rich. The recent Tamagotchi craze offered creative teachers with a tool for connecting student toys to curriculum topics like: senses, life-cycle, probability and artificial life. New twelve dollar HotWheels cars have computers in them capable of measuring velocity and distance traveled. Perhaps the most exciting new product is the LEGO Mindstorms programmable brick set that allows children to construct autonomous robots of their own design.
These trends provide parents, educators, developers and children to enter into a new discussion of the nature of learning. If we trust the natural learning inclinations of children, provide them with rich open-ended tools and don?t do too much to get in their way, we will witness an explosion of learning in the very near future.

1969: Arts and Entertainment | Semicolon
Archie comics had been around for years, since 1941, but in 1969 The Archies, a Saturday morning cartoon band that actually consisted of a group of studio musicians managed by Don Kirshner, has their one and only #1 hit song. The Archies? ?Sugar, Sugar? was the 1969 number-one single of the year in the U.S., UK, and South Africa.

Did best actor Oscar winner swear in French?
By Courtney Garcia
Best actor Oscar winner Jean Dujardin may have been able to sneak a curse word into his acceptance speech Sunday night via his native French tongue.
After French actor (and "Dancing With the Stars" vet) Gilles Marini tweeted he?d heard a swear word drop?from the Oscar-winner?s mouth during his?speech, E! Online?questioned Dujardin about the possible verbal slippage. "The Artist" star replied guiltily, ?Uh yeah?I?m sorry.?
Asked on TODAY, Dujardin told host Ann Curry, he was ?over the moon? with excitement after winning the award, that his thank you generally translated to, ?It was amazing, it was incredible,? and that everything he said was PG-rated.
The French excerpt of Dujardin?s speech comes towards the end, when he imagines how the actor he played in "The Artist" might react to the award.
?If George Valentin could speak, he?d say, ?Wow! Putain, genial, merci, formidable, merci beaucoup, I love you!?? The actor screamed enthusiastically.
Translated directly, this means, "Wow! F***, amazing, thank you, incredible, thank you so much, I love you!"
Access Hollywood spoke to Dujardin?s mother, who accompanied him to the show, and had this to say about her son?s language. ?I don?t like, I don?t like [that] he said [it].?
No one from France is gawking, nevertheless. Best director winner, Michel Hazanavicius, who worked with Dujardin on ?The Artist,? adds ?It?s not really a bad word, we always say that in France.?
Dujardin wasn't the only one to drop a swear word on the Oscars stage. Filmmaker TJ Martin, who won the best documentary feature award for football film "Undefeated," was bleeped for calling the win "f------ awesome," but later said "we meant no offense."
Any French speakers out there? Did you notice the word? Tell us on Facebook.

Afghan president renews appeal for calm after deadly riots
Afghanistan?s president renewed his calls for calm Sunday in a televised address to the nation after the burning of Korans at a U.S. base sparked five days of deadly protests.
About 30 people have been killed, including four U.S. soldiers, since the incident came to light Tuesday. NATO and the British government recalled their international advisers from Afghan ministries late Saturday after two U.S. military advisers ? a lieutenant colonel and a major ? were found dead in their office with shots to the back of their heads.
More related to this story
?Now is the time to return to calm and not let our enemies use this situation,? Mr. Karzai said. Asked about the unprecedented recall of NATO staff, Mr. Karzai said it was an understandable step.
?It is a temporary step at a time when the people of Afghanistan are angry over the burning of the holy Koran,? Mr. Karzai said. ?We are not against this,? he added.
It is still unclear who shot the men inside a heavily secured wing of the Interior Ministry, or if the attacker had been apprehended. The Afghan media reported that it was a police intelligence officer, without citing a source. The U.S. military has not yet released the names of the two men killed.
Mr. Karzai said much was still unknown about the shooting. ?Who has done this, and whether he is an Afghan or a foreigner, we do not know. We are saddened by the incident and express our condolences to their families,? he said. The Taliban claimed that the shooter was one of their sympathizers and that an accomplice had helped him get into the compound to kill the Americans in retaliation for the Koran burnings.
Members of the international military coalition described the removal of advisers as a temporary security measure, stressing that they did not expect it to affect partnerships with the Afghans that are key to preparing the country?s security forces to take on more responsibility as international troops draw down.
?We can confirm that as a temporary measure, the British embassy has withdrawn civilian mentors and advisers from institutions within Kabul and that we?re keeping the situation under review,? said Catherine Arnold, a spokeswoman for the British Embassy. She declined to say how many people were affected by the decision.
The NATO recall affects advisers numbered ?in the low hundreds,? said Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, a spokesman for the international force.
The U.S. government had already ordered its government advisers to stay inside the secure embassy compound earlier in the week out of fear of retribution, said Gavin Sundwall, a U.S. Embassy spokesman.
Mr. Karzai?s appeal came as the protests appeared to be dying down on their own. There were no reports of violent demonstrations as of midday Sunday.
It would be the first day of calm since Tuesday, when it first emerged that Korans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a large U.S. base north of Kabul.
President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials have apologized for what they said was a mistake, but their regrets did not quell the protests.
During protests on Thursday, an Afghan soldier turned his gun on foreign troops, killing two American soldiers, during a riot outside a U.S. base in Nangarhar province.
This shooting and Saturday?s at the Interior Ministry were the latest in a rising number of incidents where Afghan soldiers or policemen, or gunmen wearing their uniforms, have killed NATO forces. Last month, France suspended its training program and threatened to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan a year ahead of schedule after an Afghan soldier shot and killed four French soldiers on a base in the east.

Opera Mini 6.5.2 (for Android)
If you're a smartphone user on a tight bandwidth budget, you'll really like Opera Mini 6.5.2, the lighter sibling of Opera Mobile 11.5.5. (free, 3.5 stars). Designed for just about any hardware running Android 1.6 and higher, and those with limited data plans, Opera Mini requires only one-tenth the bandwidth of a traditional browser. Granted, Mini requires that you to relinquish embedded video support?Flash and HTML5?but that's not a big sacrifice for the bandwidth you end up saving.
Unobstructed Views
Both Opera Mini and Mobile set the right stage. I pair the two because, unlike Dolphin Browser Mini 7.0 (free, 3 stars), which employs a different interface than its sibling, Opera Mini 6 looks nearly identical to its full-size counterpart?an incentive to stay seated with Opera. Both Opera browsers lack the swagger of Firefox 10's (free, 3.5 stars) swipeable trays, but the clean bottom-fitted navigation bar, defined by the Opera "O," looks and performs well. The tab-sorting tray, which reveals miniaturized page views, is a visual treat. Minimalists will appreciate how Opera provides a Full Screen Mode as well as the option to individually disable both the navigation and status bars. There's even a Mobile View that compresses full-size Web pages for the mobile screen (albeit, with mixed success).
As with its kin, Mini supports text wrapping, though the feature is made more potent with the latest release's dynamic pinch-zoom: text responds to the slightest pinch. Unlike Firefox or Dolphin, though, Opera carries an old-fashioned sensibility: separate search and URL fields. I consider this a frivolous use of already limited mobile screen estate; however, I'm certain that some users appreciate the distinction. At the least, it makes choosing search engine?for example, toggling between Google and Wikipedia.com?more accessible.
Dialing Extensions
Every time you open a tab you're greeted with a fully customizable collection of your favorite websites called a Speed Dial. The feature is clever enough that it's won imitation by Safari and Chrome ("Top Sites" and "New Tab Page," respectively) and duplication by Dolphin ("Speed Dial"). Your Speed Dial comes pre-populated with some Opera favorites (e.g. Facebook), though you'll have to manually configure your sites because Opera's Speed Dial doesn't automatically populate with frequently visited sites.
In the context of alternative browsers Firefox and Dolphin, Opera's greatest drawback is its subtraction of Add-ons. While the desktop client recently gained Extensions, Opera has yet to make them available for either of its mobile browsers. On the other hand, some international users who cannot access Google's Marketplace will appreciate that Opera is the only Android browser to bundle a mobile store through which to download apps.
Donning Cufflinks
Opera offers a host of browsers: whether you're surfing on a tablet, desktop, or one of 3,000 different headsets, Opera Link synchronizes your bookmarks, but it also transports those custom Speed Dials and search engines. I would love to see Opera take the feature a step further, and, in the model of Mozilla, add history and passwords to tote.

Make Your Travel Plans More Effective With These Tips! | World ...
For both rookie and experienced travelers, visiting a place that you have never been can be both fun and frightening. So before you pack your bags and book your flight, read over this handpicked selection of travel tips and tricks for advice that will help you to make the most of your next pleasure trip.
Do your best to make your flight is comfortable by booking your specific seat on the plane. Frequently, but not always, you can choose a certain seat or area of the plane that you prefer. Once you have reserved your flight, look for options on booking your seat. This can have a huge impact on your ability to enjoy your flight.
If you are taking your dog with you on a trip, they should be well trained and ready for any situation you may encounter. Your dog should respond to your commands and be comfortable on a leash. Keep them on a leash whenever you are traveling. If you are in control of your dog at all times, it will be much safer when you travel or are in unfamiliar surroundings.
Always bring a contact case wherever you travel. You can fill these with a little gel or lotion so you do not have to bring the entire bottle with you.
If available, try requesting a room on an upper floor. It might seem like no big deal, but thieves have an easier time breaking into rooms on the ground floor. Sliding doors are also a security risk, so if you have a choice, opt for a room without them. These large, glass doors are extremely easy to break into.
When planning a hunting or camping trip, always be sure to have an accurate and up to date map of the places that you will be visiting and keep them with you. You?ll need a compass to make sense of the maps, but a GPS would be the ultimate safety tool.
To avoid any unnecessary issues when travelling by plane, make sure any gifts you bring are unwrapped. Security is paramount, and the TSA will not hesitate to unwrap a gift to inspect its contents. If you are going to take a gift along, do not wrap it.
If you are traveling to another country, you should buy an electrical adapter before you leave home for your electronic devices. Shop around your local discount stores for the best deal. The adapters available near the airport and hotels will certainly cost far more money.
When traveling, make sure to roll up your clothes versus folding them. This little tip saves you lots of room in your luggage. When you get to where you are going, unroll and fold them if you like. Utilizing this strategy will lower the amount of luggage you will need to take with you.
If you?re planning on making hotel stays, travel candles are something you?ll want to bring with you. It will add a pleasant aroma to your room. Try a scent like lavender if you have problems sleeping in a strange place. The scent is believed to help people relax. There are many candle options available that are small and the wax is contained to prevent wax from causing damage.
If you are renting a car for your trip and have kids, bring car seats! The car seat that you own is probably better than the one a rental company would supply, and your seat is one that your child is comfortable with.
Do not go to a currency exchange if you can help it. Check with your bank before you leave, and notify them you are traveling overseas. They will help you find the best way to purchase and also let you know the exchange rates for using your credit card or ATM overseas. A better way to obtain currency in the new country is by using ATM machines. A lot of times these machines offer better exchanges rates, and are cheaper than using an exchange.
If you are planning on traveling, it is important that you decide where you are interested in traveling and what you are interested in doing so you can pack accordingly. Efficient packing makes for a more efficient vacation.
Pack dark clothes when you are planning to travel. These colors will better disguise any wrinkles or dirt, which are common occurrences while traveling. If you feel that dark colors are too dreary, you could bring lighter accessories to add to your look.
Hotel staff like room service staff and the bell hop are paid meager salaries and tips are very much appreciated. Generally, you will give one dollar per piece of luggage, and anywhere between two and five dollars a day for housekeeping. This will help ensure that you maintain a good relationship during your stay.
In conclusion, you might be thinking about skipping your annual trip because of financial difficulties. Apply the advice from this article and you will be on your way to budget friendly travels in no time.
Are you currently thinking of to get more information on travel and leisure alone? Within the following we have created the resources you should get started. You?ll look for the right information about hiking the cinque terre

Narrator as Hero | Limebird Writers
I am in the midst of copyediting and critiquing a memoir about a middle-aged man who decided to move in with his twenty-seven-year-old son. This author has a background in education and writes a fantastic observational tale of the ordeal of moving from his large, sprawling house in Georgia to his son?s two-bedroom ranch home in New England. He has a strong command of vocabulary, and he is careful to keep his narrative objective as he describes the setting, his new job, his son?s friends.
Despite the interesting factual plot, I have been feeling like something deeper is missing from his narrative. About twenty pages in, I realized what it was. I?m having trouble connecting to the narrator. I don?t know who this man is, or why I should care about his mid-life crisis at all.
The author is our hero in this memoir. The role of the hero is such that the reader is privy to all his thoughts, ideas, dreams. This helps us to relate to the hero much quicker, more easily.
What do we, as the reader, anticipate when a hero invites us to tag alongside him in his crisis? Don?t we want to see him clearly? Hear his rants? Feel his pain or sorrow? Commiserate with his loneliness, financial burdens, bad luck? Understand his motivations? Root him on to his dreams and goals?
When I bring up comments about the lack of inner story throughout the manuscript, the author gets squeamish. He admittedly is resistant to digging down deep and giving more of his outlook on life, or even, his reasons for moving in with his son and writing about it. He is a teacher first and foremost, and for him to write about himself in his narrative is like visiting a foreign country unable to speak the language.
Maybe I?m barking up the wrong tree, but I?m afraid that without incorporating himself he is missing a beautiful chance to write a book that will stand out from the stacks. When I read a book, I want to connect with the POV character, and in non-fiction such as his the POV character is the author. I want not only to?walk alongside the author as he goes on his daily jaunts, pointing out the various sights of interest, but I want to know what pulls this author forward. I want to know why he?s bothering to share his experience with me, and why should I care?
Outer story might motivate a reader to pick up a book. Inner story is what connects readers to the story and makes them care about what happens from beginning to end. If I want to read his book, it isn?t only because I want to read about a father and son trying to reconnect. It is because I want to read a story that makes a difference to my life in one way or another.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? John Glenn made his historic spaceflight alone in 1962 but celebrated its 50th anniversary Monday among hundreds of people within his orbit, from fellow headline-making astronauts and NASA's administrator to family, friends and students at Ohio State University, where the public affairs school bears his name.
They watched footage of the launch, laughed at his enduring sense of humor and showered him with applause, praising the man who became the first American to orbit the Earth on Feb. 20, 1962.
Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon, told the audience at the celebratory gala that Glenn was "no ordinary pilot." There was a need for leadership in the space program in the early 1960s, Armstrong said, and Glenn "literally rose to the occasion."
The former astronaut and U.S. senator from Ohio, now 90, circled the Earth three times in five hours and was viewed as a national hero for helping to lead the United States into space.
"I think the hero thing is in the eye of the beholder," Glenn said during a question-and-answer session with Annie, his wife of nearly seven decades. "I don't look at myself that way."
Asked about his heroes, Glenn said he admires different qualities in different people, such as the perseverance of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, who was severely injured in a shooting last year.
Her husband Mark Kelly, a retired astronaut and commander of the space shuttle Endeavour's final mission, was the night's featured speaker and said he was honored to be sitting between two of his own heroes, Armstrong and Glenn. He brought the audience a message from Giffords: "Be passionate. Be courageous. Be strong. Be your best."
Glenn urged the audience to support research and education and shared the lessons he learned when he was among the top military test pilots presented in 1959 as the Mercury Seven. The only other surviving Mercury astronaut is Scott Carpenter, who called out the memorable line "Godspeed John Glenn" moments before the rocket ignited for Glenn's spaceflight.
"With a lot of work and a lot of people organized, you can do almost anything," Glenn said.
Earlier Monday, NASA had surprised Glenn with the kind of anniversary gift only a space agency can give, enabling him to speak live with the International Space Station from a stage at Ohio State University.
Sitting on stage with NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, he chatted with three space station crew members about space research and NASA's future. Commander Dan Burbank appeared by video link, flanked by two flight engineers floating in the zero-gravity environment, and said the crew was delighted to help commemorate Glenn's momentous trip.
"Fifty years ago today, Friendship 7 was orbiting planet Earth, and that helped in a very big way, paved the way for America to become a space power, and to go to the moon, and to do the things that we're doing right now on the International Space Station," Burbank said.
Glenn had a light-hearted but educational exchange with the crew, asking them about the types and number of experiments on board ? more than 100, they said ? and explaining to his gravity-bound audience of more than 200 people that, for example, a candle burns differently in space than on Earth.
When Bolden asked the astronauts which experiment they'd like to hand off to Glenn if he could join them, Burbank suggested research on the "regenerative environmental control systems" on spacecraft.
"That's a fancy word for our toilet," flight engineer Don Pettit added. "So he wants to put Sen. Glenn busy fixing the plumbing up here."
Glenn took the humor in stride, replying: "That's exactly what I thought I was going to get assigned to."
Bolden joked that Glenn sometimes bugs him about making a trip to the space station. Glenn became the oldest person to fly in space in 1998, at age 77.

Illinois Ag Leadership Prepares for Travel Seminar in China and India :
February 20, 2012
The Illinois Agricultural Leadership Program (IALP) Class of 2012 participants gained insights into the important agriculture markets of China and India during the International Perspectives Seminar held at the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) in Urbana/Champaign.
The February 9 and 10 seminar included 15 sessions that focused on exploring the economic, agricultural, and historical/cultural significance of these two large international trading partners.? The seminar is designed to prepare the 29 agricultural professionals for a trip to China and India in late February and early March to explore supply and value chains in those countries.
Over a two-year period the IALP class, a leadership education program conducted by the Illinois Agricultural Leadership Foundation (IALF), is attending 14 seminars covering current social, political and economic issues in the agriculture industry.? At the International Perspectives Seminar, the group heard about the history and traditions of China from Dr. Kai-Wing Chow from the History Department and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures.? Dr. Eric (Er) Fang, from the University of Illinois? College of Business, led a discussion on the economic perspectives of China.? ?College of ACES Professor Emeritus Dr. Burt Swanson discussed agriculture in China.
Presentations on business etiquette and practical Chinese language were given by Ms. Lucinda Morgan of the Office of International Programs, U of I College of Education, and Ms. Mei-hsuan Chiang from the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies.? University of Illinois Instructor and IALP graduate (1984) Ron Warfield teamed up with Matthew Bennett of Bennett Farms, also a program graduate (2002) to talk about ?Debunking the ?Ugly American.??
The first day concluded with a series of presentations by agribusiness professionals giving perspectives on marketing in China and India.? These presentations were given by Matt Jansen, Senior Vice President and President of Oilseeds Business Unit, Archer Daniels Midland, and on the IALF Board of Directors, and Jason Colwell, Director of International Business Development, GSI.?
