Creating an Ancestor List ("Ahnentafel") in Family Tree Maker 2012

In response to my?Saturday Night Genealogy Fun post,?I received an email question from a reader who asked "How do I make an Ahnentafel using my genealogy software?" ?It struck me that perhaps some readers do not know what an "ahnentafel" is...so I'll show how my three genealogy software programs create one.

Each program does this differently, with somewhat different results, so I'll go through Legacy Family Tree 7.5, Family Tree Maker 2012 and RootsMagic 5 in a series of posts.? ?The Legacy Family Tree 7.5 example is here.

Note that I like to use the term "Ancestor List" rather than "Ahnentafel" for this list, since it is really not a "Name Table." ?For this "Ancestor List," I want ONLY the ancestor name, birth date and place, death date and place, and marriage date and place. ?For me, a printed "Ancestor List" is much easier to use than a series of linked and printed pedigree charts.

Note: ?Russ Worthington posted Creating Ahnentafel Report in Family Tree Maker 2012 today, but he included children in a multi-generational ancestors ("ahnentafel") report, rather than an Ancestor List (without children). ?One thing he did that I liked was he included the Sources in his Report. ?I'll do that in this post also.

1) ?Family Tree Maker 2012, with myself highlighted on the Legacy Family View, I clicked on the "Publish" workspace button in the top Menu icon row.?The "Publish" workspace opened, and I selected the "Genealogy Report" set of reports, and then highlighted the "Ahnentafel Report" thumbnail:



?2) ?After double-clicking on the "Ahnentafel Report" icon (or clicking on the "Create Report" button on the right-hand side), the report opened:
In the 4-generation report created above, I had unclicked all of the check boxes on the right-hand side except for the "Exclude children" button, which was left checked. ?The report above lists the burial fact, similar to what I did in Legacy Family Tree 7.5.

3) ?The user can select which Facts to include by clicking on the "Items to Include" icon on the right-hand side (just below the "Ahnentafel Report Options" ?heading:

I could also change the font size, font type, and font color by clicking on the "Fonts" icon in the "Ahnentafel Report Options" area.

4) ?After changing the number of generations to 12, it took awhile to create this report:

The Ancestors List above includes the Burial Fact, and has 109 pages.

5) ?I went back and eliminated the Burial Fact, and the Ancestor List report slimmed down to 100 pages.

6) ?I really liked the idea of having the Sources listed for my ancestors' birth, marriage and death events (all the better to see which Events for which I do not have a Source Citation!), so I went back into the "Items to Include" and checked the "Include Sources" box. ?The resulting report was 150 pages (first and last pages shown below):


There are 1,422 persons on this list (hand counted...) but only 841 source citations. ?I have lots more work to do!!


Some comments about the information included and the formatting of the report:


* ?The marriage line is included at the end of the husband's information (which is the classical "ancestor list" way)

* ?The burial date and place is included in the list (if requested), but is separated from the person's information. [Update: ?Russ commented that there is an option to include the burial information in the rest of the Person information.]

* ?The names are in Pedigree chart order, and skip the missing ancestors (which is the classical "ancestor list" way).

* ?The Parents names of each person are not included on the list (which is the classical "ancestor list" way). [Updated to reflect reality - my mistake!. ?Thanks, Russ. ?At least someone reads it...]

All in all, Family Tree Maker 2012 makes a very nice Ancestor List, with flexibility in the information to be included. ?The user can save the list as an HTML, RTF, CSV or PDF file to their computer (using the "Share" button), or can Print the whole file or a range of pages using the "Print" icon on the "Ahnentafel Report Options" area.

Angie Harmon Joins Fight Against Prostate Cancer

Stand Up To Cancer and Safeway Foundation have teamed up with Angie Harmon to raise awareness and funds in the fight against prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer currently affects more than two million American men and remains the second-leading cause of cancer death for men in the US. 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime.

Ms. Harmon, who will return to primetime television in the summer of 2012 in the third season of TNT?s original drama series, Rizzoli & Isles, will appear in a print and 30-second broadcast public service announcements in direct support of the campaign.

To debut in June, the public service campaign coincides with Safeway?s annual in-store Prostate Cancer Awareness fundraiser, which gives customers multiple opportunities to give at more than 1,450 Safeway stores across the United States. The public service campaign will extend through the month, which includes the national observance of Father?s Day on Sunday, June 17.

This campaign offers a limited-edition, reusable shopping bag with the words, ?It starts with a wish; it can end with a cure.? The bags will be available at all Safeway locations, as well as online at safewayfoundation.org, and all proceeds will go to prostate cancer research.

Additionally, Safeway shoppers will have a chance to make a separate donation at checkout stands.

One in 10 veterans lack health insurance

The Veterans Administration operates the country?s largest health-care system, with more than 1,400 hospitals employing nearly 15,000 doctors. That expansive system does not, however, cover everyone: One in 10 veterans currently lack health insurance, according to a new Urban Institute study.

Uninsured veterans are more likely to be unemployed or have a lower-income job.

The Veterans Health Administration does provide coverage for most veterans, although not all: Eligibility is determined in part by factors including income, injuries sustained in combat and length of service.

The eligibility requirements leave 1.3 million veterans without health care benefits, alongside 0.9 million members of their families.

Uninsured veterans tend to be younger than those with coverage and also less likely to have sustained an injury in combat. Uninsured veterans also tend to have higher rates of unemployment and lower levels of income and are less likely to be married ? all of which lower the odds of receiving private coverage.

?Their lower likelihood of being full-time workers and being married likely contribute to their lack of coverage, as these attributes are characterized by lower access to employer-sponsored health insurance,? write Jennifer Haley and Genevieve Kenney.

The expansion of coverage under the Affordable Care Act could lower the uninsured rate among veterans ? not by targeting them specifically, but by expanding health insurance to lower-income populations. Nearly half the uninsured veterans would become eligible for Medicaid, which will expand to cover all those with incomes under 133 percent of the Federal Poverty Line. Others will qualify for subsidies to purchase private insurance coverage on the individual market.

Relationships After Sexual Assault | Hayleys Comments

Or should I say the ?lack of relationships? after sexual assault. Trust is a difficult thing, especially when you?ve fallen victim to a rape. After becoming a victim myself and eventually seeking therapy, I couldn?t trust anyone, not even myself. Can you imagine the feeling of not being able to trust yourself? I am still very mistrustful and fearful. To understand why, I would have to revert back to the crime itself along with some common misconceptions.

Since writing about this publicly, many people, mainly men, have argued with me that rape is something that men cannot help doing because of their ?natural? sexual drives and desires. This misconception is also the reason that victim-blaming excuses often fly without much questing from others. ?She was dressed like a slut,? ?She is very promiscuous,? and many many more excuses for rape crimes take the blame off the perpetrator and place it on the victim. At one point, I too thought that rape was a sexually motivated crime. When it happened to me I was young, cute and totally disinterested in the ?friends? who raped me. I thought that maybe they had wanted me so bad and knew they couldn?t have me so they resorted to rape because it was the only way to ?get? me. It made sense in my head, at the time.

This is of course wrong. Rape is not about sex. It is about control. It is a crime like any other where something is taken without consent. If a man walks into a bank with a gun, he uses the gun as a weapon to procure the money he wants from the bank. Rape is similar. A rapist overpowers the victim by using sex as a weapon much like a gunman scares bank tellers into submission by waving around a firearm.

Rape has never been about sex. It is all about control. A rapist is similar to a bully in the school yard picking on smaller kids so he could feel ?bigger.? It is possible that the friends who raped me did it because they knew I would never sleep with them in a million years willingly. This still doesn?t make it about sex. Maybe they wanted to have sex with me but they knew that I wouldn?t and out of anger and resentment decided that they were going to have sex with me with or without my permission. That night, they put something in my drink so they could do it without fear of me remembering or finding out. In the end, they got what they wanted despite what I wanted. Yes, what they originally wanted might?ve been sex, but without my consent what they wanted from me surpassed the sexual and entered into the realm of control: they wanted me to do what they wanted.

Since starting counseling, my ability to trust has greatly decreased. For some reason talking about what happened has opened whole new metaphorical can of worms. Not only do I have trouble trusting others, even friends and family I?ve known for years, but most of the time I feel like I cannot even trust myself. This is a problem many victims of sexual assault experience and it often it results in isolation from friends and family as well as a failure to forge new friendships and relationships.

A lot of people have difficulties in relationships but a person who has survived rape and/or domestic violence will have extra issues. It takes a patient and special person to be their lover or even just their friend. Sometimes the additional trials and issues involved in relating to a sexual assault survivor are very very sad. Last weekend I was invited to an awesome concert by a good friend. It was an all day music fest and it would be just the two of us and one of her good guy friends. I wanted to go but the idea of crashing at her place along with some guy I didn?t know terrified me. Even though he was a good friend of her?s, someone she knew and trusted, I could not bring myself to trust. Because she is such an understanding and kind person, she wasn?t insulted when I told her why I was uncomfortable going. But not everybody is that understanding. Most people are not.

The friends and family I have both from my ?real life? and those I?ve met online are the some of the most patient people in the world. I spazz. I am afraid. I do not and sometimes cannot trust. I overreact. I am overly emotional. With all those terrible traits, they are always there for me. They know I am trying but cannot help it. What has happened to me, to my emotions and my mind, is equivalent to a physical handicap. My perception of life and everyday occurrences will never be normal. They can never be put right again. Like a person who has lost a limb in an accident, the damage has been done and nothing will ever bring that limb back. Now that the limb is gone, they are presented with more challenges. They still must live life just like they did before they had?a physical handicap it is just that now they have to find a new way to do the things that used to come natural to them. There are extra obstacles they must surpass to live normally; permanent obstacles that will be a new layer upon the structure of what they used to consider their normal daily life. Over time, things do become easier, but they will never again be the same and only the strongest people can be friends with an participate in relationships with a person who has experienced this type of emotional trauma.

I sarcastically said that this article should be titled the ?lack of relationships after sexual assault? because it takes an empathetic and patient person to be supportive and understanding to someone who has experienced that kind of trauma. Many survivors, including myself,? have been dumped by a significant other after they learned that being a victim of sexual assault was part of our past. Though the term ?survivor? sounds pretty tough, the truth is survivor?s are often fragile and find themselves being ditched by guys and friends alike who are often too callous or impatient to deal with the emotional rollarcoaster a rape survivor experiences and deals with daily. It is easy for a survivor to become overly dependent on friends once they learn that they can open up and trust again because it feels so amazing to finally be able to trust a person.

Sometimes honesty about your past as a survivor or even just being yourself ends up pushing friends who cannot handle it away. And though it always hurts, the heart knows in the long run that by being ditched, this ?friend? was actually doing them a favor. I know that as a survivor of sexual assault, I do not need half-assed cold-hearted men or friends in my life; people who are scared of the mental scape that makes up my reality. Imagine living in my head? Imagine experiencing my fear and trauma first hand? If a person cannot be there to hold my hand when something becomes difficult for me, if he or she does not feel that my good qualities outweigh my bad ones and they cannot be forgiving of my emotional issues or way of handling things then maybe they do not deserve my friendship. Relationships after sexual assault are not always easy. In fact, sometimes the relationship with the self is as challenging as the relationships with the people around you. True friends will reveal themselves in time and it is those friends who must always be appreciated and never forgotten.

Russia claims new missile can overcome missile defenses

Russia says it conducted a successful test of a new missile that is meant to outwit the NATO antimissile shield and has a maximum range of 10,000 miles.

Within days of NATO's announcement that its European antimissile shield is now "provisionally operational," Russia has claimed to have tested a new type of intercontinental missile that can outwit the new missile defenses.

The new missile, which some Russian media said is named the "Avante-garde," was successfully fired on Wednesday from Plesetsk cosmodrome in northwestern Russia, and reportedly hit its target on the Kamchatka Peninsula, several thousand miles away, a few minutes later. The Russian Defense Ministry says the new weapon has a maximum range of about 10,000 miles and can carry a bigger payload than any previous Russian missile.

"This new intercontinental ballistic missile is intended to strengthen the capabilities of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces, including its capabilities for overcoming antimissile defenses," Defense Ministry spokesman Vadim Koval told journalists.

"The missile was built with maximum use of existing components with new elements and technologies developed during the production of fifth-generation missile systems, in order to shorten its development time," he added.

Analysts say the new missile is probably a modification of the Topol-M, a modern, mobile ICBM that is well known in the West and is accounted for under the terms of the new START accord signed by US and Russian leaders two years ago. That treaty stipulates that both sides have the right to modernize their missile delivery systems as long as they remain under a ceiling of 1,550 deployed strategic warheads.

The new missile reportedly can boost into space faster than previous models thanks to a powerful new fuel, which would presumably enable it to outrun any ground-launched interceptors from NATO's European antimissile system.

The independent Interfax agency quoted a retired Russian missile commander, Gen. Viktor Yesin, as saying the new weapon was specifically designed as part of Russia's efforts to counter NATO's antimissile system, which is slated to become fully operational by 2018, as well as other regional shields being contemplated by the Pentagon.

"This is one of the technical means Russia?s political and military leadership has developed in response to America?s global system of missile defense," Yesin was quoted as saying.

Another potential Russian reaction is to deploy short range Iskander-M ground-to-ground missiles in the Russian Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad and around Russia's periphery, in order to be able to strike quickly against US missile defense systems.

Earlier this month, Russia's top general, Nikolai Makarov, even threatened to launch a preemptive strike against NATO's antimissile shield if it appears to undermine Russia's strategic nuclear deterrent.

Russian press reports suggest that the new missile is not only faster in the boost-phase than all its predecessors, but that it may also be able to maneuver during its flight in order to baffle enemy radars and dodge interceptors.

Media reports also say that a previous attempt to test the new missile on Sept. 27 failed, when it suffered an undisclosed malfunction and crashed just 10 miles from its launch site.
