Hooah! US Army strong on Pinterest

usarmy.vo.llnwd.net via U.S. on Pinterest

By Athima Chansanchai

It's not enough that Pinterest's traffic has grown 40-fold in 2011's last six months?? now it's so irresistible even the U.S. Army has succumbed to the fast-growing addiction, with 24 boards and 580 pins ranging from basic training and soldiers to families, fashion and chow.

Showing that it's not just a man's army, or that only women enjoy Pinterest (despite figures that show women make up 97 percent of Pinterest's Facebook "likes"), the Army has amassed thousands of followers browsing boards labeled, "HOOAH!" "DIY & Decor" and "Good Morale."

Quoting from Wikipedia, the HOOAH! page defines the term: "Hooah ... is a U.S. Army battle cry used by soldiers and also in use by the U.S. Air Force airmen 'referring to or meaning anything and everything except no.' "

On this page, images of soldiers in action are found alongside Army versus Navy posters. On other pages, family homecoming photos and pictures of patriotic recipes adorn boards.?

The U.S. Army's Pinterest also pins?most recent news stories, videos and photos (via the U.S. Army's Office of the Chief of Public Affairs). It offers as a disclaimer: "Repinning does not equal endorsement."

Pinterest allows users to share images and thoughts and add to Facebook "likes" as well as spread the joy via tweet.?According to AppData, Pinterest has about 10.4 million registered members, with an average of 2 million daily users..

Other armed forces are on Pinterest, but aren't as robust as the Army's boards. In this battle, Army does beat Navy, which has only 12 boards and 140 pins. While most of the Navy's boards have followers that number in the hundreds, the Army's boards have 1,000-plus followers each.

The U.S. Marine Corps is also on Pinterest, and while it only has 16 boards and 201 pins, it does have some eye-catching titles: "Things that go BOOM!" "Semper Awesome" and "Devil Pup Swag," for instance.

The U.S. Air Force's Pinterest seems to be the only armed force that hasn't earned its pinning wings, with zero boards.

In Michigan, Romney doesn't mention GOP rivals

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) ? Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is letting TV ads do the dirty work in Michigan while he stays on the high road with voters.

Romney told several hundred people at a rally Wednesday in Grand Rapids that he would do much better at leading the economy than President Barack Obama.

But the former Massachusetts governor made no reference to his Republican rivals. Polls show former Sen. Rick Santorum making a surge nationally.

Santorum is making a play for Michigan's Feb. 28 primary. A Santorum victory there could be embarrassing for Romney, who grew up in Michigan. His father, George, was a top auto executive and three-term governor.

A pro-Romney PAC is airing TV ads calling Santorum a big spender and Washington insider. Romney is heavily outspending Santorum on the air.

US men to play 1st World Cup qualifier in Tampa

updated 12:50 p.m. ET Feb. 15, 2012

CHICAGO - The road to the 2014 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro begins in Florida.

U.S. Soccer announced Wednesday that Raymond James Stadium in Tampa will be the site of its first qualifier, June 8 against Antigua and Barbuda. It will be the first World Cup qualifier in Florida since November 1980, when the Americans beat Mexico 2-1 in Fort Lauderdale.

The Americans, trying to qualify for their seventh straight trip to soccer's championship, have never played Antigua and Barbuda.

"Our focus since last summer has been to prepare this team for World Cup qualifying, and we are thrilled that we can start the process in Tampa," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. "It's critical that we start qualifying off on the right foot, so to be in a place where the team has had such great support is a huge positive for us. The players always talk about how great the surface is at Raymond James Stadium, so overall we think it is the ideal venue."

The U.S. is 3-2-1 in Tampa, including a 3-1 victory over Ecuador in 2007, when 31,547 fans saw Landon Donovan score a hat trick. Tampa also hosted the U.S. Under-23 team in qualifying for the 2008 Olympics, with the Americans going 2-0-1 against Cuba, Honduras and Panama.

The Americans also play at Guatemala in World Cup qualifying on June 12. After the summer break, the U.S. plays at Jamaica on Sept. 7, then hosts the Reggae Boyz four days later. In the final games of the regional semifinals, the Americans are at Antigua on Oct. 12 and close Group A at home against Guatemala on Oct. 16.

The top two teams from each of three groups advance to the 2013 regional finals in North and Central America and the Caribbean. The first three teams will qualify for the 2014 tournament in Brazil, and the fourth-place team goes to a home-and-home playoff against the Oceania champion ? likely New Zealand ? for another berth.

Group B has Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guyana and Mexico, and Group C includes Canada, Cuba, Honduras and Panama.

As part of the Americans' preparations for qualifying, U.S. Soccer also announced Wednesday that the Americans will face Scotland in an exhibition May 26 in Jacksonville, Fla. The U.S. also will host Brazil on May 30 in Landover, Md., and play at Canada on June 3.

BootHammer Video Game Reviews is excited to reveal our review for The Simpsons Arcade Game. It is an arcade beat ?em up developed by Konami that was released in 1991. It was in fact the first video game based on The Simpsons franchise. The voice actors of the immediate family (Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, and Yeardley Smith) provide voices for their respective characters. It uses the same game engine and controls as the 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade smash hit (also made by Konami), and therefore has a strikingly similar feel?which is good thing. It was released on Xbox Live Arcade on February 3, 2012 and was then made available for the PlayStation Network on February 7, 2012.

The game?s release kicks off the celebration of The Simpson?s landmark 500th episode. ?Of all The Simpsons video games, this demented classic is my favorite,? said Matt Groening, The Simpsons Creator and Executive Producer.

The game begins with Waylon Smithers and two of his goons stealing a giant diamond from Springfield Jewelers for Mr. Burns. Smithers bumps into Homer Simpson, whose family is conveniently walking down the street. The encounter knocks the diamond out of Smithers? hand, and Maggie snatches it in her mouth (to replace the pacifier), prompting Smithers to kidnap Maggie (rather than just the diamond) and run off. The Simpsons must give chase, but hundreds of suit wearing goons under Mr. Burns? employ stand in their way. The Simpson family go through many stages chasing Smithers, from Downtown Springfield, Krustyland theme park, Springfield Discount Cemetery, Moe?s Tavern, the Springfield butte, a concussion induced dreamland and much more. Eventually, Smithers retreats to the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, where you will race after him and eventually face the evil Mr. Burns.

Your exact attacks will differ depending on which two characters are being used. Food found within the game can be used for healing, and various items (such as a slingshot or hammer) can momentarily be used as an additional weapon. The Japanese version of the game includes small scale nuclear bombs that, when thrown, clear all on-screen enemies.

Characters and Modes

Play as your favorite Simpsons character as you chase down Smithers and Mr. Burns on this epic quest to save Maggie. Featuring four-player online and offline cooperative play as well as eight classic Springfield locations, players can participate in several different game modes for varied gameplay experiences. Quarters Mode recreates the feeling of the original coin-op classic for a more challenging experience. Survival Mode tests players? skills with only one life at their disposal. Finally, Free Play Mode provides players with unlimited Continues for a more casual experience.

As touched on earlier, the Japanese ROM is also included in this version of The Simpsons Arcade Game, which features new weapons, higher scoring and a slightly different ending. This version of the game has never been released outside of Japan and is a different take on the beloved classic. As an added bonus, fans can view classic flyers and posters specifically made for the game back in 1991.

Closing Thoughts

The best times of this game are had when you team up and take on this highly entertaining and hilarious port as a group effort. The Simpsons is easily one the best shows of all time and this arcade port is one of the best investments you can make in guaranteeing some serious nostalgic gaming fun. They keep coming at you and you keep knocking them down while it all goes down within the wacky Simpson universe. This one is getting 9 ?D?oh?s? out of 10.

Review Rating:??9/10

Avid gamer who enjoys the old nostalgic titles as much as the newest releases. Remakes of old classics are my absolute favorite. I also enjoy experiencing new IP's on each console, especially when the creators give the game an artistic edge. I've been lucky enough to start out on the NES and watched as the industry and technology behind it evolve. I"m psyched for the next generation consoles and what is possible.

Astronauts Snap Amazing Northern Lights Videos From Space (SPACE.com)

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station are on a quest to snap photos of the northern lights so the public can better appreciate this spectacular cosmic display.

The space station crew has already beamed home dazzling photos and videos of Earth's auroras, including a series of movies released by NASA last week. Now, the astronauts are teaming up with Canadian scientists on Earth in a coordinated campaign to track the northern aurora displays.

Throughout February and March, NASA astronauts Don Pettit and Dan Burbank will be on the lookout for flare-ups of the northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, over Canada. The spaceflyers will beam their pictures and videos back to Earth for the public to see within 48 hours.

The footage snapped from 240 miles (386 kilometers) above the Earth is complemented by aurora imagery captured and webcast in real time from Yellowknife, a city in Canada's Northwest Territories.

It's all part of an effort called AuroraMAX, a public engagement initiative that aims to show people the beauty of the northern lights and highlight the science behind the phenomenon. AuroraMAX is a collaboration among the University of Calgary, the city of Yellowknife, Astronomy North and the Canadian Space Agency.

Auroras result when charged particles from the sun collide with Earth's atmosphere, generating a glow. These particles are funneled over the poles along Earth's magnetic field lines, causing the northern lights in the Northern Hemisphere and the southern lights, or aurora australis, in the South.

The auroras are often supercharged by massive eruptions on the sun known as coronal mass ejections. These storms blast huge clouds of solar plasma into space at speeds of 3 million mph (5 million kph) or more. If the eruption is aimed at Earth, skywatchers at high latitudes can be treated to quite a show when the particles arrive a day or two later.

Dazzling aurora displays should be on the rise over the next few years. The sun is currently in the middle of an active phase in its 11-year solar weather cycle. The current sun storm cycle, called Solar Cycle 24, is expected to peak in 2013, NASA scientists have said.
