BMWK Visits NFL Headquarters to Talk Youth Safety | Black and ...

BMWK Co-Founder Lamar Tyler w/ NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell

Earlier this month I was invited, along with other bloggers and press, to NFL headquarters in New York for a luncheon on youth safety in sports. If you follow football even just a little bit, you know that player safety has been in the headlines, and more specifically concussions. We spent the afternoon getting educated on concussions, and what the NFL along with it?s partners are doing to make the game safer from that aspect. Below are six things that I learned about youth safety in sports during my visit.

PARTNERSHIPS:

The NFL has?partnered?up?with?organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and USA Football to educate youth coaches, players and parents about how?to?prevent, identify, and properly treat concussions.

FOOTBALL CULTURE:

USA Football, the national governing body of American football at the youth level, is working to change the culture of the sport. They?ve realized that in order to do this they have to start with kids who are just beginning the game. The Heads Up Football program is a new approach to tackling that the organization is spearheading. The best way to prevent concussions is to take the head out of the game, and the Heads Up program, aims to do just that.

THE PROPER AGE TO BEGIN TACKLE FOOTBALL:

I know that a lot of you want to know what is the proper age for your child to begin tackle football. I asked that question to USA Football Executive Director ?Scott Hallenbeck, who advised that currently the organization doesn?t have an age that they promote. There currently isn?t enough specific research to link concussions to children beginning tackle football at a certain age.

CONCUSSIONS & YOUTH:

When many of us think about concussions, we think about tackle football. The truth is that concussions happen in many other youth sports as well, like lacrosse, and soccer. For children under the age of 10 the most likely cause of concussions are bicycles and playground activities.

LEGISLATION:

The NFL has worked to pass legislation in states across the US to protect youth athletes from head injuries. The laws, often referred to as?Lystedt Laws normally involve three tenets;

  1. Annual?concussion education for athletes, parents and coaches.
  2. Players must be removed from play when suspected of having a concussion.
  3. A licensed health care professional must clear the athlete before returning to play.

For more information about legislation in your state visit NFLevolution.com.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN THE PROCESS IS?

After I left NFL HQ the thing that stuck with me the most is the parent?s involvement in the youth safety. I learned that most concussions are not the ?lights out? variety?that we see on NFL football fields during the season. Normally concussions happen without the player losing consciousness and symptoms may not appear for 24-72 hours. During this time the player will no longer be on the field, they?ll be with their parents. Commissioner Goodell made two comments regarding parents that stuck with me as well. The first comment was that no one knows your children as well as you do. You can tell when something isn?t right, or when they?re acting a bit differently. The?commissioner?also made a strong statement in regards to coaches who won?t take players off of the field.?Commissioner?Goodell spoke about sports being like anything else in life. As parents we won?t leave our children with babysitters, neighbors or others who don?t look out for their best interests, so don?t leave them with a coach who won?t do the same.

The topics above only scratch the surface of what I was exposed to, but thankfully the bulk of this information has been made available on the web for you and me. To learn more about concussions and youth safety in sports, you can check out the following websites:

BMWK family, have you or your child ever experienced a concussion? What happened? Do you have concerns around your children and injury in youth sports?

Suicide bomber hits US vehicle, kills 2 Pakistanis

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? A suicide bomber rammed a car filled with explosives into a U.S. government vehicle in northwestern Pakistan on Monday, killing two Pakistanis and wounding 19 others including two Americans, officials said.

The attack in the city of Peshawar was a vivid reminder of the danger U.S. officials face while working in Pakistan, especially in the country's northwest where Taliban and al-Qaida militants are strongest. Insurgents have carried out scores of bombings in Peshawar in recent years, but attacks against American targets have been relatively rare because of the extensive security measures taken by the U.S. government.

The bomber struck the armored vehicle after it left the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar and as it was traveling through an area of the city that hosts various international organizations, including the United Nations, said police officer Pervez Khan, who was part of the security escort for the vehicle as it moved.

The attack killed two Pakistanis and wounded 19 other people, said senior police officer Javed Khan.

Two Americans and two Pakistanis working at the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar were among the wounded, said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, who called the attack a "heinous act."

The wounds to the Americans were not life-threatening, a U.S. Embassy official said on condition of anonymity because the information had not been officially released.

The charge d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy, Richard Hoagland, praised Pakistani security forces for saving the lives of the four consulate employees.

"In this dangerous world where terrorists can strike at any moment, we must all work together ? Pakistanis and Americans alike ? because we have a strong mutual interest in defeating terrorism," he said.

The car driven by the suicide bomber contained 110 kilograms (240 pounds) of explosives, Pakistani police officer Abdul Haq said.

The blast ripped apart the SUV carrying the U.S. Consulate employees and triggered a raging fire. Rescue workers and local residents rushed to put out the fire and pull away the dead and wounded. All that was left of the SUV in the end was a carcass of blackened, twisted metal.

The driver of the vehicle that was attacked, Atif Nawaz, said the force of the blast knocked him out.

"When I came to my senses, I jumped out of my car and screamed, 'What happened?'" said Nawaz, whose face and hands were badly burned. "An American was also with me in my car at the time, and I don't know what happened to him."

Irfan Khan, a local resident, said he was at a nearby shop when the blast occurred. "I quickly looked back in panic to see smoke and dust erupt from the scene," he said. "I ran toward the scene along with others and saw two vehicles destroyed and the larger vehicle on fire."

One dead person was on the ground near the SUV, and a foreigner was injured, said Khan.

"We put the injured man and the dead body in a private vehicle," said Khan. "There were more injured in the surrounding area too."

Another eyewitness, Wajid Ali, said he helped put another seriously wounded foreigner into the vehicle.

But another vehicle arrived, presumably from the U.S. Consulate, and took away the wounded foreigners, said Javed Khan, the police officer. Some of the policemen escorting the U.S. vehicle were also wounded in the attack and their vehicle was damaged, he said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicion will fall on Taliban and al-Qaida militants who have long had their sights set on the United States. American drones have fired scores of missiles at the militants' hideouts in Pakistan in recent years, and Washington has given the Pakistani military billions of dollars to fight the extremists.

Islamist militants have targeted American assets in Peshawar, which is located some 135 kilometers (85 miles) from the capital of Islamabad, on several occasions in recent years.

They unleashed a car bomb and grenade attack against the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar in April 2010 that killed four Pakistanis, including three security personnel and a civilian. In August 2008, the top U.S. diplomat at the consulate survived a gun attack on her armored vehicle. Three months later, gunmen shot and killed an American in Peshawar as he was traveling to work for a U.S.-funded aid program in the region.

Despite the danger, Peshawar has long been a vital hub for U.S. interests in the region. It is the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and is located on the border of Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region, the main sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida militants in the country.

Much of the funding that was handed to Afghans fighting Soviet rule in neighboring Afghanistan in the 1980s was channeled through Peshawar. The city's proximity to the tribal region made it a vital place for American officials to be based following the attacks in the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001, that triggered the invasion of Afghanistan. Many militants have used the tribal region as a base to attack U.S.-led forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

Cosmetic Surgery Nottingham Your Health and Belly Dancing ...

There are a lot of dangers associated with cosmetic surgery and if you are considering any procedure you will find it very worthwhile to go for the best service as opposed to the cheapest. Your health is the most important thing and the company that you approach for cosmetic surgery should have that as their top priority. Unfortunately, some of the cheaper services don?t and so it is really important that you do your research before you go under the knife or decide on any procedure.

Unlicensed providers are more common now than ever before since the government deregulated cosmetic procedures so there is a risk that you could end up with a botched job and there won?t be much you can do about it. Cosmetic surgery in Nottingham comes in the form of the reputable company that you need and so you could benefit from looking into this area if you are considering any procedure. Stay away from any company that is not regulated to ensure you don?t end up in a sticky situation like those broadcasted on TV regularly.

Cosmetic surgery in Nottingham can provide a number of different procedures as well as solutions to ensuring your health is priority for you as well as them. Talk to those who know and find an expert that can advise you on whatever you are interested in. A full and detailed consultation before any procedure begins is vital so you understand what is going to happen and so the company understands exactly what it is that you are looking to achieve. The company that you choose should be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) like the available services of cosmetic surgery in Nottingham. If they are not, then they should as a minimum be registered in the Treatments You Can Trust scheme. Avoid any company who cannot clarify these details for you to ensure that you are getting the best treatment. These enrollments are not a necessity for a clinic by law, but it is better to be safe than sorry and if a clinic is enrolled in these, then you can benefit from peace of mind of a safe service.

Your health is important and any good clinic offering cosmetic surgery treatments should be looking to offer fitness, confidence, and exercise possibilities as well. This is a great sign as shows that the clinic has your health in mind and is not there to push you into any procedure when there could be a possible alternative.

Cosmetic surgery in Nottingham can change your life without having a cosmetic surgery procedure after all. You can find a service that is a service and not all about diving head first into the treatment. The best clinics will make your time fun and you can have a great time doing treatment the alternative way. Belly dancing is fantastic and will give you a chance to get some exercise, improve your confidence, have fun, and get the desired results that you may have been considering surgery for. It is a great way to work on those muscles and will leave you feeling good about yourself.

Speeding Up Your PC, Part 5: Getting Secure

One of the most dreaded words for any computer user is "malware." Rogue software and infected files can implant bits of code that log keystrokes, spy on activities, slow down searches and snatch financial information. Users can help protect their PC by installing antivirus software, but even this comes with its own set of issues and is not always foolproof.

NY teen killed putting head out of party bus in NJ

NEW YORK (AP) ? A teenager headed to a sweet 16 party was killed after he stuck his head out of the emergency hatch of a double-decker bus and hit the underside of a highway overpass, authorities said.

The gruesome accident followed the warnings of a security guard on the bus who said he told the teens repeatedly not to open the hatch.

Daniel Fernandez, 16, was among 65 teens aboard the bus Friday night from New York City on its way to the party in Garfield, N.J., said Steve Coleman, spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The teens were dancing and the bus had gotten hot, the security guard, Alex Franco, told the Daily News. Still, he said, he had asked the teens to leave the emergency hatch alone.

"I told them not to open the hatch, like three or four times, but kids, they don't understand," he said.

Fernandez's English teacher at St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens echoed that sentiment.

"Sometimes kids don't recognize their own mortality," said Jane Lynch, her voice trembling.

Franco said he had gone downstairs to tell the driver that it was getting too hot.

"Two, five minutes I was downstairs," he said.

But then he heard teenagers screaming, and he saw Fernandez on the floor of the bus. "There was so much blood everywhere," he told The New York Post.

Fernandez, who lived in Queens' Woodside neighborhood, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

He was a beloved student, said Lynch, who taught him last school year.

"He was an adorable, low-key kid, with a sweet smile," she said. "Kids loved him; he had lots of friends and was popular with the girls."

She said a group of students had a special last project, producing and appearing in a takeoff on the novel "Lord of the Flies," about a group of boys on a desert island who try to govern themselves, with disastrous results.

"He was very hands-on, he took the leadership role," said Elizabeth Gonzalez, a student teacher at St. Francis last year.

Fernandez played the villain in the video students posted on YouTube, she said.

In class, "he was very lively, and high-spirited," she said. "And he had so much potential in his writing."

The school said on its website that it shared in grief and shock over his death. A wake was set for Monday, the site said.

Designer Limousines, which operates the bus, expressed its "deepest heartfelt sympathy" to the teen's family. The company said it would conduct an internal investigation.

Calls to the Fernandez family home in Queens rang unanswered.

Legal Intro
Many people mistakenly believe that estate planning only requires the writing of a will. Estate planning, however, also can involve financial, tax, medical and business planning. A will is a component of the planning process, however you will require other documents too to totally address your estate planning needs. In addition, there are lots of issues to take into account in creating an estate plan. To begin with, consider the next questions: What are my assets and what is their approximate value? Whom will i want to receive those assets-and when? Who should manage those assets easily cannot-either inside my lifetime or after my death? Who needs to be responsible for taking care of my minor children easily become struggling to care for them myself? Who should make decisions in my behalf concerning my care and welfare basically become not able to look after myself? What should i want completed with my remains once i die and where would I want them buried, scattered or otherwise not laid to rest? Thus, through proper estate planning, you are able to determine: How and by whom your assets will probably be managed for your leisure during your lifetime should you ever become not able to manage them yourself.. When and under what circumstances it makes sense to distribute your assets during your lifetime. How also to whom your assets will probably be distributed after your death. How by whom your personal care will probably be managed and just how medical care decisions will be made in your lifetime in the event you become not able to care for yourself.

Elder Law: Abuse Or Neglect

help - Elder abuse is an intentional act (abuse) or a lack of knowledge/ability to provide care to an adult person (neglect). Elder abuse can happen in many different ways that include assaultive acts, neglect, financial exploitation and/or psychological or emotional mistreatment. An elderly person is thought as somebody that is age 65 or older.

Assault includes causing pain and/or injury by molesting, slapping, bruising, forced sex, cutting, burning, restraining.

Neglect includes refusal or failure to supply adequate care, food, shelter, clothing, medicine, and/or medical aides (glasses, dentures, walkers).

Financial exploitation includes illegal or wrong use of income, charge cards, funds or another assets.

professional - Psychological/emotional mistreatment includes mental suffering or despair brought on by name calling, yelling, insulting, ignoring, isolating, threatening, or demanding acts.

Abuse could also include the violation of basic rights like the right to worship as one chooses, the authority to assembly, the freedom being left alone, and the to handle one?s personal and financial affairs unless declared not capable of doing so by due process of law.

Senior Legal Assistance: Estate Planning

An income Trust might help insure that the assets will probably be managed in accordance with your wishes-even if you become struggling to manage them yourself.

In setting up your living trust, you may function as its trustee initially otherwise you may choose another person to do this. It is possible to name a trustee to consider within the trust's management to save you time if you happen to become unable or unwilling to handle it yourself. At your death, the trustee-similar for the executor of the will-would then gather your assets, pay any debts, claims and taxes, and distribute your assets in accordance with your instructions. Unlike a will, however, this could all be done without court supervision or approval.

However, few people requires a living trust. Young couples without significant assets and without children, who intend to leave their assets to one another if the first one of them dies don't need a full time income trust and would not reap the benefits of creating a living trust. Other persons who don't have significant assets and possess very simple estate plans also don't need a living trust. Finally, anybody who wants court supervision on the administration of his / her estate must not possess a living trust. The higher the worth of your assets (specifically if you own property), the higher the dependence on a living trust. Having a living trust could be crucial in the event of the accident or sudden illness.

Guardianship Or Caregiver Agreements

Conservatorship is a legal term discussing someone who has been deemed gravely disabled from the court and struggling to meet their basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter. There's two forms of conservatorships: Lanterman Petris-Short (Lanterman Petris Short act of 1967, referred to as LPS) and Probate conservatorships. They're governed from the state's individual laws. In California, they may be governed from the California Probate Code, and Welfare and Institutions Codes. Some states or jurisdictions refer to it as a guardianship, or perhaps a trustee, rather than a conservator.

affordable - Conservatorships are usually put in place for severely mentally ill people who are gravely disabled, elderly individuals with Dementia or Alzheimer's Disease who lack mental capacity, or individuals with developmental disabilities who may or may not lack mental capacity. Mental capacity has to be determined by a medical physician or a psychiatrist proficient in the field and is also documented and provided to legal court as evidence.

A limited conservatorship usually describes individuals who are developmentally disabled, and they can retain additional control over their personal affairs than other conservatees if they're capable. For instance, they could retain their directly to decide where they might live.

Legal

Using a basic knowledge of the above-described processes, along with the appropriate documents and notes at your fingertips, will assist you whenever you talk with either an estate planning specialist or elder law specialist. It will also bring you a stride closer to resolving any legal issues you might have - which often will minimize your reliance on attorneys. Perhaps, it'll even minimize family strife.

Staying Healthy: 5 Reasons Why Bloodborne Pathogen Training Is ...

In today?s society, staying healthy has become a major preoccupation for the average citizen and for the nation as a whole. Apart from the usual matters of regular exercising and eating right, staying healthy also involves acquiring knowledge in more advanced fields, such as bloodborne pathogen(BBP) training. This type of training is important not only for people who work in the medical field but it can also prove quite useful for the unprofessional as well, for a number of reasons. Read below to find out some more things about the importance of BBP training.

? First and foremost, BBP training is an important skill to have because these types of microorganisms cause potentially lethal diseases, such as AIDS, Syphilis, Malaria or Hepatitis B and C, and they are very easily transmitted from one person to another. Thorough and efficient BBP training decreases the risk of more people coming into contact with these deadly viruses and bacteria and it minimizes the spread of the above-mentioned diseases.

? For medical employees or for people who work with hospitals and other medical facilities, BBP classes is important because it offers them clear guidelines and strict protocols they need to follow for their own safety and for the safety of those around them. This is why it is important for employers to require all staff members, not just those who have direct contact with patients, to attend BBP classes.

? It is always better to prevent than to treat and this is precisely what BBP programs focus on. The purpose of the training is to reduce the number of people who get sick due to bloodborne pathogens as opposed to spending millions of dollars every year for treating the diseases which are often incurable and have deadly consequences. Consequently, the importance of BBP training resides in the fact that it not only reduces the number of patients with bloodborne diseases, but it also saves quite an impressive amount of money out of the national budget.

? BBP programs typically include the same universal precautions and standardized safety rules regardless of the medical unit or company that offers them. This makes it easier for medical employees to change places of work without needing to take the course again or for vendors to work with multiple healthcare facilities.

? The safety rules you can learn during BBP training can be used not only within hospitals or medical clinics, but also in your day to day life. Potential hazards surround else everywhere, from our house to the neighborhood bar, and it is important to know how to recognize them and avoid any incidents.

The importance of attending a BBP program is undeniable, both for people working in the medical field and for others who work with or have connections with medical environments. If all the info presented above has not convinced you yet, you can always contact an agency that offers this type of training programs for more details.
