Newton wins restraining order against landlord

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? A judge granted Wayne Newton a temporary restraining order against his landlord Thursday amid stalled plans to turn his lavish Las Vegas estate into a celebrity museum ? a project that has sparked allegations of fraud, mismanagement, animal abuse and sexual harassment.

Clark County District Court Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez ruled that developer Steve Kennedy must stay 50 feet away from the Newton family and their home, effectively putting the brakes on construction to turn Newton's Casa de Shenandoah estate into a tourist attraction.

Kennedy, the manager of CSD LLC, filed a lawsuit two weeks ago claiming the Newton family was unwilling to move out of the house so it could be converted into a museum. The Newtons filed counterclaims alleging breach of contract and fraud.

The legal wrangling paints an uncertain future for Newton's 40-acre estate featuring South African penguins, Arabian horses, celebrity memorabilia and 17th-century antiques imported from European castles.

Newton told reporters after Thursday's hearing that he regretted entering into the deal with Kennedy.

"Totally," Newton said. "I don't like vultures."

Newton lives in the main house on the estate with his wife and their 10-year-old daughter. Kennedy purchased the property for $20 million in 2010 with the intent of building the Newtons a new $2 million home on the estate and converting the gold-trimmed main house into a public venue.

In his lawsuit, Kennedy alleged the Newtons unreasonably delayed the project by refusing to pick a location for their new home. The Newtons countered that Kennedy failed to obtain proper construction permits and did not act in good faith.

"They had no intentions whatsoever of creating a museum honoring Wayne Newton," said Newton's lawyer, J. Stephen Peek, during the hearing.

Newton attended the hearing with his wife, Kathleen McCrone Newton, and her sister, Tricia McCrone, who also acts as the family's publicist and lives in a guest house on the estate. During the hearing, Newton and his wife wore broad smiles, even as McCrone Newton shook her head repeatedly as the allegations that she and her husband had not been cooperative were presented.

Peek claimed Kennedy tried to punish the Newton family by ordering that they banish their prized collection of 55 Arabian horses. Kennedy allegedly removed rose bushes throughout the property that had been planted by Newton's deceased mother. Newton was also prevented from accessing his antique car collection featuring a 1978 Rolls Royce Corniche convertible built for actor Steve McQueen and a one-of-a-kind Bentley Sedanca Coupe, according to the court filings.

The Newtons also said that improper construction at the home caused several leaks, threatening their expensive art collection that includes paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Salvador Dali and Vincent van Gogh. The family also claimed Kennedy filled up an artisan well that Newton previously used as his "meditation pond."

Kennedy's attorney Charles McCrea Jr. countered that the home had a faulty roof and that the well reeked of sewage, with the toxic fumes having killed three penguins that lived on the estate.

McCrea Jr. said the Newtons must vacate the property so construction can continue. He cited concerns about who would cover the expense of caring for the property's many horses, with costs reaching $40,000 each month. CSD wants to donate the horses to a ranch that has expressed interest in adopting them.

The lawsuit claimed Newton sexually harassed a young female employee hired to train the horses by repeatedly kissing her on the mouth. The worker quit and has threatened to sue Newton and CSD, according to the lawsuit.

Newton said Kennedy and the woman had a personal relationship and that the woman begged for her job back after she was dismissed last year.

Kennedy declined to discuss the case as he was leaving the courtroom.

Newton said he hoped the museum will eventually open under a different owner.

"Time will tell if it is built," Newton said. "It will not be built under the present circumstances of management."

Both sides are expected to return to court on July 30.

Construction plans for the museum called for a zoo, visitors' center, car exhibition and a theater where Newton could perform live nightly. It was initially scheduled to open late last year.

Clark County building records show CSD received a notice of violation for working on the museum without a permit in October. The company later obtained the necessary paperwork in December.

Newton has lived at Casa de Shenandoah since 1968.

First Impressions On Fluent, The Startup Promising ?The Future Of Email?

Fluent-logoY Combinator's Paul Graham recently begged?entrepreneurs?to consider "frightening ambitious startup ideas," like building a better search engine or replacing universities. "Any one of them could make you a billionaire," said Graham. "That might sound like an attractive prospect, and yet when I describe these ideas you may notice you find yourself shrinking away from them," he said. "Don't worry, it's not a sign of weakness. Arguably it's a sign of sanity. The biggest startup ideas are terrifying." Among those terrifying ideas was rethinking the inbox, and in particular, the Gmail inbox. Although there has been much complaining about?the sorry state of email, very few companies are addressing the situation. It's just too hard. But there is an interesting startup to watch in this space, which happens to be thinking about the bigger picture. The somewhat stealthy?Fluent?is not shy about its vision either, offering a tagline that boldly proclaims it's offering "the future of email." But can it deliver?

One in four St Louis Metro home sales are foreclosures; One in three ...

By Dennis Norman, on May 31st, 2012

st-louis-realtor-dennis-norman-real-estate-foreclosures

This morning RealtyTrac? released its U.S. Foreclosure Sales Report? for the first quarter of 2012, which shows that sales of homes that were in some stage of foreclosure or bank owned accounted for 24 percent of all St. Louis metro area home sales during the first quarter ? up from 17 percent of all St Louis home sales in the fourth quarter and the same as the first quarter of 2011. The report also shows that, during the quarter, over 10 percent (10.36) of St Louis metro home sales were short-sales, an increase from 5.85 percent the previous quarter and an increase from 7.46 percent from the first quarter of 2011.

St Louis Short sales are Hot and Cheap!

Not only did St Louis short sales increase 77 percent in the first quarter of 2012 form the prior quarter, (hmm?.maybe we?re seeing some of the benefits of new deadlines imposed on lenders for responding to short sales?) and accounting for 10 percent of all home sales during the first quarter but the average price paid for them dropped to $88,384, a decrease of 8 percent from the previous quarter, and a decrease of 21 percent from a year ago when the average price was $111,833.

Competition is driving prices up on St Louis REO?s

The increased interest in investing in rental real estate as well as the fact that REO?s are the ?low-hanging fruit? have driven up demand and, in contrast to short-sales, are driving prices up on REO?s in St. Louis.? Additionally, as REO inventories decline, there are less opportunities.? St Louis REO sales accounted for 13.5 percent of all St Louis home sales in the first quarter, up from 11 percent of all sales in the previous quarter but down from 16.18 percent of all sales in the first quarter of 2011. St Louis REOs sold for an average price of $77,041 in the first quarter, an increase of over 11 percent (11.6) from the previous quarter and about the same as a year ago.

One in three home sales in the City of St Louis are foreclosures?worst in State?

During the first quarter, over one-in-three (34.92 percent) of all home sales in the City of St. Louis were foreclosures, a higher rate than any other county in the state of Missouri (I know the city of St Louis is not a county, but since it is not part of St Louis County it is treated as a county for the purposes of RealtyTrac?s report).? In St Louis county, 23.13 percent of the home sales in first quarter were foreclosures, St Charles county 27.58 percent, Jefferson County 23.32 percent and Franklin County 11.29 percent.? For Missouri as a whole, 23.27 percent of all home sales during the first quarter of 2012 were foreclosures.

'Game of Thrones' star does cinnamon challenge

By Randee Dawn

While playing Ayra Stark on "Game of Thrones," Maisie Williams has seen horrors no young girl should be subjected to. But apparently she hasn't had enough, and in this video, the 15-year-old aspiring actress accepts the cinnamon challenge.

Turns out, as it is for just about everyone else, the spice is dark and full of terrors -- and it does not go down smoothly. And in this case, water is a perfectly good substitute for wine, to wash out that horrible reaction.

HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One

If you need an inexpensive personal printer in any size office, make sure the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One ($99.99 direct) is somewhere on your must see list. One of the few $100 printers that leans more towards office needs than home printing needs, with features like faxing and an automatic document feeder (ADF), it offers all the key features you need for light duty office use at a surprisingly low price.

The 4620's price and office-centric design put it in head-to-head competition with the Editors' Choice Brother MFC-J430w ($100 street, 4 stars). Each printer offers some advantages over the other?the MFC-J430w delivers faster print speed, for example, while only the 4260 can print through the cloud. But either one can serve nicely as a personal printer in any size office or in the dual role of home and home office printer.

Like the MFC-J430w, the 4620 can print from, scan to, and fax from a PC as well as work as a standalone copier and fax machine. Its ADF offers a slightly higher capacity, at 35-sheets, and?as with the Brother printer's ADF? it complements the letter-size flatbed, to let you scan multipage documents and legal size paper. Neither printer offers memory card slots, support for PictBridge cameras, or other photocentric features.

Another similarity is that the 4620 doesn't offer wired network support, but offers WiFi, so you can share it in a micro office or at home in the dual role of home and home office printer. However, the limited paper handling?with an 80 sheet tray, no duplexing, and no upgrade options?makes it a poor choice for sharing in an office.

The Wi-Fi also opens the door to the features HP implies by calling the printer an e-All-in-One, including HP ePrint (for printing through the cloud), Apple AirPrint (for printing from iOS devices), and the HP ePrint Home & Biz print app (for printing from both Android and iOS devices). However, none of features will work unless the printer itself is connected to a network by Wi-Fi. If you plan to connect by USB to a computer that's on a network, you can't use them whether you have Wi-Fi on your network or not.

Setup, Speed and Quality
Setting up the 4620 is standard fare. For my tests, I installed it on a Windows Vista system using a USB connection. On our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), it scored reasonably well for speed, at an effective 3.4 pages per minute (ppm). That makes the 4620 significantly slower than the MFC-J430w at 4.3 ppm, but keep in mind that the Brother printer's fast speed is one of the reasons it's an Editors' Choice.

HP OfficeJet 4620

As another point of reference, the 4620 is notably faster than the somewhat more expensive Dell V525w All-in-One Wireless Inkjet Printer ($129.99 direct, 3 stars), with its more typical speed for this price range, at 2.9 ppm. Note too that much like the 4620's speed for business applications, its photo speed was also reasonably fast, but short of impressive, averaging 1 minute 3 seconds for a 4 by 6.

The printer's output quality is generally par for an inkjet. Text quality is arguably a touch below par, but best described as being at the bottom of the tight range where the vast majority of inkjet printers fall. Unless you have an unusual need for small fonts, you should find it suitable for most business needs. Graphics output quality is dead on par, which makes it easily good enough for business needs.

Photos were also par overall, but the rating breaks down as better than par for color and a little worse than par for black and white. More precisely, black and white photos in my tests showed a slight tint and a lack of deep dark blacks. Color photos, however, were at least as good as the high end of the range I would expect from drug store prints. If color is all you print, the issues for black and white are irrelevant.

If you're looking for an inexpensive, office-centric personal printer, the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One will certainly do the job. I'd like it better if it also had an Ethernet connector, so you wouldn't be forced to have Wi-Fi on your network to use the features that make it an e-All-in-One. But if you already have a Wi-Fi network or don't mind setting one up, that's not an issue. If you don't need those features, you should also consider the Brother MFC-J430w with its faster speed. But whether you want those features or not, the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One is a capable choice and well worth considering.

Was Flame virus that invaded Iran's computer networks made in USA?

By Robert WindremNBC News

As the United Nations and Iran warn that the newly discovered Flame computer virus may be the most potent weapon of its kind, U.S. computer security experts tell NBC News that the virus bears the hallmarks of a U.S. cyber espionage operation, specifically that of the super-secret National Security Agency.

The Flame virus, which is intended to gather intelligence -- not destroy equipment or data, as was the case with the notorious Stuxnet virus -- is too sophisticated to be the work of another country, said one U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity. ?It was U.S.,? said the official, who acknowledged having no first-hand knowledge of how the virus operates or was introduced into the Iranian computers.

The U.S. was also believed to have a hand in the creation and insertion of the Stuxnet virus, which targeted Iran?s uranium-enriching centrifuges.

The newly discovered Flame virus essentially ?colonizes? the targeted computers, giving hackers control over critical data stored on them, according to cybersecurity experts who spoke with NBC News.

?

U.S. intelligence officials declined to discuss the virus. ?We have no comment,? said one. ?Israeli officials, suspected in previous attacks, denied involvement.

The virus was first discovered and announced over the weekend by a Russian cybersecurity organization after reports of massive data losses in Iranian government computers.? Kaspersky Lab told Reuters it found the Flame infection after the International Telecommunications Union asked it to investigate. By some accounts, the virus has been operating in the wild for as long as five years.

"This is the most serious (cyber) warning we have ever put out," Marco Obiso, cybersecurity coordinator for the U.N.'s Geneva-based ITU, told Reuters on Tuesday, referring to a bulletin about the virus expected to be issued in the next few days.

The confidential warning will tell member nations that the Flame virus is a dangerous espionage tool that could potentially be used to attack critical infrastructure, Obiso said.

Other experts said the virus appears to be a different type of invader than Stuxnet.

"From reading press reports, this appears to be penetrating networks to surveil, as opposed to destroy, as was the case with Stuxnet,? said Michael Leiter, former director of the National Counter Terrorism Center and now an NBC News analyst. ?Such computer network operations are core components of what our and other intelligence services do day in and day out.

?Our intelligence services know that any weakness in an information system can mean the entire system is vulnerable. ?This makes defense very, very hard.? Network defenses must work reliably and in real time across the entire network to defend against persistent intruders."

Iran?s cybersecurity officials seem to agree.? The New York Times reported Iran?s Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center issued a warning Tuesday, saying, ?This malware is a platform which is capable of receiving and installing various modules for different goals.?

If this is indeed a U.S. cyberwarfare operation, said computer security expert Roger Cressey, the target is likely to be Iran?s nuclear program and its decision-making apparatus.?

"Whoever has developed this is engaged in very sophisticated intelligence gathering on computer networks throughout the region.? Clearly, Iran is a top priority for this program," said Cressey, former chief of staff of ?the President?s Critical Infrastructure Protection Board under George W. Bush and now an NBC News analyst.

Two years ago, the U.S. and Israel were suspected of inserting the Stuxnet virus into the Iranian centrifuge center at Natanz.?When the control software was corrupted, the motors that control the uranium centrifuge operations didn?t operate correctly, wobbling instead of spinning the way they?re supposed to, U.S. officials say.

Iran?s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that the work of Kaspersky Labs helped Iran uncover the infection and remove it from the centrifuge control program.? Cybersecurity officials have told NBC News that the infection, while heavily publicized, was not as effective in disrupting Iran?s nuclear program as has been portrayed in some media accounts.

But Stuxnet is an example, said one U.S. official, of how those aiming to slow the Iranian nuclear program, which the U.S. says is aimed at producing nuclear weaponry, can have an effect similar to that of economic sanctions. The Iran program keeps making progress, he said, but never quite gets there.

Serena Williams loses in 1st round at French Open

PARIS (AP) ? For more than a decade, whatever the state of her health or her game, no matter the opponent or arena, Serena Williams always won first-round matches at Grand Slam tournaments.

Always.

Until Tuesday at the French Open. Until Williams came within two points of victory nine times, yet remarkably failed to close the deal against unheralded and 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano of France.

Until a theatrical, 23-minute final game filled with 30 points, more than enough for an entire set, featuring ebbs and flows, high-pressure shotmaking and nerves ? and even thunderous protests from the crowd when the chair umpire docked Razzano a point. That look-away-and-you-miss-something game included five wasted break points for Williams, and seven match points that she saved, until Razzano finally converted her eighth, 3 hours and 3 minutes after they began playing.

All told, until Tuesday, Williams was 46 for 46 in openers at tennis' top venues, and those encounters tended to be routine and drama-free, befitting a woman so good that the goal ? and 13 times, the end result ? was a major championship.

Not this time. Now Williams' first-round Grand Slam record is 46-1 after as stunning a denouement as could be in a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 loss to Razzano on the red clay at Roland Garros.

The fifth-seeded Williams, considered by many a pre-tournament favorite, led 5-1 in the second-set tiebreaker, before dropping the next 13 points in a row. Suddenly, her shots didn't always carry their usual oomph; her court coverage was ordinary.

"I've been through so much in my life, and ... I'm not happy, by no means," said Williams, her eyes welling with tears. "I just always think things can be worse."

The 30-year-old American returned to action last year after missing about 10 months because of a series of health scares, including two foot operations and blood clots, a scary stretch she says altered her worldview.

The rowdy spectators in Court Philippe Chatrier would have been pulling for Razzano anyway, of course, because of her citizenship. But their support was particularly strong because of her recent heartbreak, well-known in France: Razzano's fiance ? Stephane Vidal, also her longtime coach ? died at age 32 of a brain tumor in May 2011, a little more than a week before her first-round match at last year's French Open.

He had encouraged her to go ahead and enter the tournament, so she did, honoring his memory by stepping on court to play, a black ribbon pinned to her shirt. When she walked out of the locker room for what turned out to be a straight-set loss, she wore a gold chain that Vidal had given her as a Valentine's Day gift a few years earlier.

"Honestly, the past is the past," Razzano said Tuesday, when she dealt with leg cramps starting in the second set. "I think now I did my mourning. I feel good today. It took time."

Said Williams: "I know of her story and her husband. We all have stories. I mean, I almost died, and Venus is struggling herself. So, you know, it's life. You know, it just depends on how you deal with it. She obviously is dealing with it really well."

Williams' exit was by far the most newsworthy development on Day 3 at Roland Garros, where Maria Sharapova won 6-0, 6-0, and Rafael Nadal began his bid for a record seventh French Open championship with a straight-set victory.

Williams entered Tuesday having won her previous 17 matches, all on clay. She withdrew before what would have been her most recent match, a semifinal at the Italian Open on May 19, citing a bad lower back, but said on Friday she was better, then refused to place blame on that injury after being beaten by Razzano.

"No, no, no. I didn't feel anything abnormal," said Williams, who counts the 2002 French Open among her 13 Grand Slam singles trophies. "I was 100 percent healthy."

Occasionally after losing points, Williams would bend forward and lean on her racket frame, as though perhaps stretching her lower back. She also clutched at that spot and whacked her racket there after miscues.

And there were plenty of those, 47 in all, 11 more than her foe. That's where Williams put the emphasis when trying to fathom how she let her big lead slip away. From 5-1 in the tiebreaker, she lost the next six points to end that set, then the first seven points of the third.

"I tried. I kept going for my shots, which always works for me," Williams said. "It didn't work out today."

It sure seemed she'd be OK when up 5-4 in the second set and at 15-30 on Razzano's serve. The match was about 1? hours old ? only halfway through, it would turn out ? and Williams was two points from ending it. Razzano responded with an ace. At 6-5 in that set, Razzano showed real jitters, double-faulting twice in a row to again make it 15-30. Again, Williams was two points away. And again, Razzano held serve to extend the match.

Then came the tiebreaker, with Williams apparently in control. At 5-2, Razzano hit a shot near the baseline that Williams let go, thinking it was out. But the chair umpire, Eva Asderaki, ruled the ball was in. Asderaki overruled a call on the next point, too, helping Razzano.

Asderaki would play a key role, first warning Razzano for hindrance, then twice awarding a point to Williams because the Frenchwoman grunted loudly while exerting herself during extended exchanges. Williams found the whole thing sort of bemusing: Asderaki was the chair umpire who immediately ? with no warning ? took a point away from Williams during her loss to Sam Stosur in September's U.S. Open final.

"Well, you know, she's not a favorite amongst the tour," Williams said. "I just really had a flashback there."

A surging Razzano led 5-0 in the third set, but Williams ? as gritty a competitor as there is in her sport ? didn't go quietly. She got within 5-3, and that's when the epic game came, as much a test of will as anything.

Razzano, looking gassed, grabbed at her legs between points and double-faulted to make it 30-all. A 13-stroke point followed, and Asderaki interrupted play to make it 30-40 because of hindrance. The partisan fans jeered, whistled and banged their palms against the stadium's plastic green seats (they booed Asderaki when she walked off at match's end).

That set up Williams' first break point, but she sent a return wide. Moments later, Razzano had her first match point but ? gulp! ? double-faulted. That established a pattern.

Eventually, on the 12th deuce of the game, Williams dropped a forehand into the net. And on match point No. 8, she sailed a backhand long.

That was it. Razzano skipped to the net for a handshake, thrilled to have beaten Williams ? and to have avoided what would have been her 21st first-round departure in 47 major tournaments.

Williams' shoulders slumped. For the first time in a Grand Slam career that began at the 1998 Australian Open, when she was 16, Williams heads home after only one match.

And this was one she had in her grasp.

"I never really feel anything slipping away or anything," Williams said. "I just felt I couldn't get a ball in play."

Workers among 17 dead in latest big Italian quake

SAN FELICE SUL PANARO, Italy (AP) ? Workers at the small machinery company had just returned for their first shift following Italy's powerful and deadly quake earlier this month when another one struck Tuesday morning, collapsing the roof.

At least three employees at the factory ? two immigrants and an Italian engineer checking the building's stability ? were among those killed in the second deadly quake in nine days to strike a region of Italy that hadn't considered itself particularly quake prone.

By late Tuesday, the death toll stood at 17, with several people still missing, including a worker at the machinery factory in the small town of San Felice Sul Panoro. Some 200 people also were injured in the 5.8 magnitude quake north of Bologna in Emilia Romagna, one of Italy's more productive regions, agriculturally and industrially.

Factories, barns and churches fell, dealing a second blow to a region where thousands remained homeless from the May 20 temblor, much stronger in intensity, at 6.0 magnitude.

The two quakes struck one of the most productive regions in Italy at a particularly crucial moment, as the country faces enormous pressure to grow its economy to stave off the continent's debt crisis. Italy's economic growth has been stagnant for at least a decade, and the national economy is forecast to contract by 1.2 percent this year.

The area encompassing the cities of Modena, Mantua and Bologna is prized for its super car production, churning out Ferraris, Maseratis and Lamborghinis; its world-famous Parmesan cheese, and less well-known but critical to the economy: machinery companies.

Like the May 20 quake, many of the dead in Tuesday's temblor were workers inside huge warehouses, many of them prefabricated, that house factories. Inspectors have been determining which are safe to re-enter, but economic pressure has sped up renewed production ? perhaps prematurely.

Seven people were killed in the May 20 quake. In both, the dead were largely and disproportionately workers killed by collapsing factories and warehouses.

Co-workers of Mohamed Azeris, a Moroccan immigrant and father of two who died in the just-reopened factory, claim he was forced back to work as a shift supervisor or faced losing his job. A local union representative had demanded an investigation.

"Another earthquake ? unfortunately during the day ? that means people were inside working, so I think that an investigation will need to be opened here to check who cleared as safe these companies to understand who's responsible for this," Erminio Veronesi told The Associated Press.

At another factory closer to the epicenter in in the city of Medolla, rescue crews searched for three workers who did not turn up at roll call after the quake and were presumed dead.

Premier Mario Monti, tapped to steer the country from financial ruin in November, pledged that the government would quickly provide help to the area "that is so special, so important and so productive for Italy."

The Coldiretti farm lobby said damage to the agricultural industry, including Parmesan makers whose aging wheels of cheese already suffered in the first quake, had risen to ?500 million ($626 million) with the second hit. The Modena Chamber of Commerce estimated that the first quake alone had cost businesses ?1.5 million, with no fresh estimates immediately available.

Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini, all centered around Modena, reported no damage, and said workers were evacuated and then allowed to go home to check on their homes and families. Lamborghini planned to keep production halted on Wednesday.

The quake was felt from Piedmont in northwestern Italy to Venice in the northeast and as far north as Austria. Dozens of aftershocks hit the area, some registering more than 5.0 in magnitude.

The temblor terrified many of the thousands of people who have been living in tents or cars since the May 20 quake and created a whole new wave of homeless.

"I was shaving and I ran out very fast, half dressed," a resident of Sant'Agostino, one of the towns devastated in the quake earlier this month, told AP Television News.

Tuesday's quake struck just after 9 a.m. with an epicenter 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Bologna, according to the U.S. Geological Survey ? just several kilometers (miles) away from where the 6.0-magnitude quake that killed seven people on May 20 was centered.

In the town of Mirandola, near the epicenter, the church of San Francesco crumbled, leaving only its facade standing. The main cathedral also collapsed. Sant'Agostino's town hall, so damaged in the May 20 quake that it looked as if it had been bombed, virtually fell apart when the latest deadly temblor struck.

Labor Minister Elsa Fornero suggested the destruction to buildings was out of proportion, considering the magnitude of the quake. "It is natural that the earth shakes. But it is not natural that buildings collapse," Fornero said told lawmakers in Parliament's lower Chamber of Deputies.

The May 20 quake was described by Italian emergency officials as the worst to hit the region since the 1300s. In addition to the deaths, it knocked down a clock tower and other centuries-old buildings. Its epicenter was about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Bologna.

It's not clear why two large quakes have occurred this month, said Jessica Turner, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo. The basic driver of the activity is the same kind of geological shifting that produced the Alps, she said.

Prior to May 20, the last earthquake in the region with magnitude that large was in 1501.

Residents had just been taking tentative steps toward resuming normal life when the second quake struck. In Sant'Agostino, a daycare center had just reopened. In the town of Concordia, the mayor had scheduled a town meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the aftermath of the first quake. Instead, Mayor Carlo Marchini confirmed the death of one person struck by falling debris in the town's historic center.

Italy's soccer match against Luxembourg, a warm-up for the Euro 2012 championships, was canceled. The game had been scheduled to be played Tuesday in Parma, just 60 kilometers (40 miles) west of the quake.

He shares his extensive knowledge of the job search process with many examples and advice that can only be gained from an expert in his field. Refreshing! Career Planning at its Core

"This book was refreshing to read. At times it was emotional as I was able to relate my own life and career struggles with the author's life, and his own challenges. It was real, and I am thankful that someone was finally able to put into words what I and many others are now feeling across the country. It is a raw glimpse into the mind of a recruiter who has experienced many challenges in his life and as a result his own career was radically changed.? As a professional teacher, I was impressed by the author's ability to craft a story that was not only interesting to read, but helpful to his readers at the same time. This is much more than a job search book, it is career planning at its core."
