enough | Motherhood & Words

On Wednesday afternoon, when Donny and the girls got home, I could tell something was wrong. Stella was holding back tears.

?What?s wrong?? I asked leaning down.

?Her friend?s mom died,? Zo? stated matter-of-factly.

?What?? I asked, looking up.

?She did,? Zo? said loudly, her eyes wide.

Donny nodded, his lips pursed.

Stella handed me the note from her school. The mother of Stella?s friend?her classroom buddy?had died suddenly, inexplicably. (Stella?s class is a 1st- 3rd grade classroom, and all first graders are matched with an older buddy to help them along, encourage them.)

?Oh honey,? I said, sitting down on the love-seat on the porch, opening my arms to my daughter, feeling like I was punched in the gut. ?I?m so sorry.?

The tears came then, and didn?t stop for a long time. ?Are you sad for your friend??

Stella nodded. ?I just feel so bad for her, Mom. I just feel so sad for her.?

I rubbed her back, breathed in the scent of leaves in her hair. ?I know, Honey. It?s so, so sad.?

Finally, I asked her whether she was worried that might happen to me. I was, after all, the same age as her friend?s mother: 40 years old. She hugged me more tightly, wouldn?t let go, as if she could somehow keep me safe, keep us safe.

I brushed the hair from her eyes. ?This is very unusual,? I said. And though I can?t promise this, I said, ?I want you to know that I?m not going anywhere.?

?But it happens every three years,? she said, weeping. I had almost forgotten that when Stella was in first grade, her third-grade buddy had also lost her mother suddenly.

?It?s just not fair,? she said then, and I hugged her more tightly.

?I know, sweetie.?

We went out trick or treating later that night, and there were more tears.? On Thursday she went to school with a heavy heart, and I sat at home, finishing edits on the memoir, my own heart breaking for her friend and her friend?s family.

Stella and I went to the visitation on Thursday night. Stella?s friend was thrilled to see her, ran up and gave her a big hug. I was so glad we went. But the evening was full of raw grief. Stella sat nervously next to me as family members shared memories, cried, laughed a little. When we finally got back in our car, the tears she had been holding in for the last hour spilled out. Why hadn?t her friend been crying? Was so this so much sadder than when Great-Gahgee died?

Great- Gahgee, my grandpa, Spencer, died a year and a half ago. There were tears at his memorial service, certainly, but there was also a lot of laughter. We were celebrating his long?102 years!?life. I explained that it?s different when someone dies too young, when they aren?t done living. ?Great-Gahgee decided it was time to go. He made that choice, and he?d had an amazing, long life.?

Bedtime was rough that night, her sadness for her friend consuming her. I held her tightly. We talked about how her friend?s emotions might go up and down, how she might be really sad some days, but not others. We talked about how unfair it was.

My job is to just to be here for my daughter, to be patient with her as she works her way through her own sadness and fear. I?ll hold her tight and talk and listen and let her know it?s okay to cry. We?ll make a meal for her friend?s family. We?ll invite her friend for a play date. And each night, I?ll hold my daughter close and tell her how much I love her, how proud I am of the kind of friend she is. And I hope that?s enough.

May Improve Your Conversion Rate be Helped by a Web Design ...

Getting more traffic to your website is very good, but you need for those individuals to complete more than simply click on your website. Traffic is just the first step. However, most organizations focus too much on just finding traffic and spend far too much money on this concept. What is Website Conversion?Web transformation may seem such as a difficult term, but it is not difficult at all. It?s simply the number of individuals who visit your internet site and follow through the point of activity or POA. This may suggest publishing details about their requirements, installing something, buying your product, or whatever it is you want people to do once they visit your site. In the event that you provide goods online and people scan your choice or have the activities but don?t purchase them, this is not web site alteration. Your objective should be to create that website conversion fee bigger. You will need to look at why customers are not following through once items are added by them to a shopping cart software or click the type to fill in without really submitting it. Often it is just a matter of making the POA sharper or easier. What is Point of Action?Point of action or POA is just that ? action. It is the activity you need your visitors once they find your site to take. You might have many POAs, and you might have POAs that are important and some that aren?t as important (buying a product versus becoming a member of a weekly mail). These are generally named secondary and primary POAs. Determining the significance of your POAs is usually an advertising career, not at all something you should enable a web site design firm to do.In addition to POA, you should also fret together with your website?s consider price. As mentioned, there could be many individuals who visit your website, get a movie and never watch it or add items to a basket and never buy them. To improve your simply take price, you need to improve the number of people who do follow-through with the POA. The best way to complete this is to really make the POA clear, even though it means choosing a website design company. What is Your Exact Web Conversion Rate? So, presented this information, how do you decide precisely what your web conversion rate is? It is very easy. Just take how many people who visit your website, let us say 100. Then simply take how many individuals who actually buy those items they add to the shopping cart, let?s say seven. Your internet site conversion rate could be 7%.How Can You Improve It?Improving your web conversion rate can be quite simple. You can test different variables and there are lots of approaches to do this. If it looks somewhat overwhelming, you might want to consider choosing a web design business. An excellent web design business will help you determine what you?re doing right or wrong.

Syria Conflict: Rebels, Army Battle Over Taftanaz Airbase

BEIRUT -- Syrian rebels launched a dawn assault Saturday on a strategic airbase in the north of the country, trying to disrupt strikes by warplanes and helicopters that pound rebel-held towns and give the regime of President Bashar Assad a major edge in the civil war.

The assault, reported by activists, comes a day before the start of a key international conference in Qatar at which the United States and its allies aim to reorganize the opposition's political leadership and unite their ranks. The leadership-in-exile has been widely seen as ineffective and out of touch with rebel fighters on the ground.

Rebel forces attacked the Taftanaz airbase early Saturday morning in fighting with government forces that continued into the afternoon, the anti-regime activist Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Joining Syrian rebels in the attack were fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra, an al-Qaida-inspired Islamic militant group made up of foreign jihadis, according to the Observatory. Al-Nusra fighters, who are considered among the most experienced and disciplined among the opposition forces, have led attacks on other airbases in the north in past months.

The Taftanaz base mainly houses military helicopters, near the main highway between the capital Damascus and the northern city of Aleppo, where rebels and the military have been battling for control for months.

Online activist videos claim to show the battle, with rebels firing rockets and mortars, and smoke rising over buildings and an airstrip area. An activist speaking in the video identifies it as an attack by rebels and Jabhat al-Nusra on the base.

The videos appear genuine and are consistent with other Associated Press reporting in the area.

The capturing of the base ? and holding on to it ? would be a major achievement for the rebels, who often complain they are outgunned by government forces.

Airstrikes have been one of the most effective and feared weapons of the regime in the civil war. Rebels managed to seize control of a pocket of territory around Aleppo, but government warplanes and helicopters continue to blast towns they hold from the air. In the fierce fighting over Aleppo itself, warplanes almost daily swoop in to strafe or bomb rebel-held neighborhoods.

Rebels repeatedly target military airports and runways and often try to shoot down military jets to curtail the regime's air power, even though they don't have anti-aircraft weapons.

In an August attack on the Taftanaz base, rebels claimed to have badly damaged 10 military helicopters.

Activists say more than 36,000 people have been killed during Syria's 19-month-old conflict, which began in March last year as a largely peaceful uprising but has transformed into a brutal civil war.

Several attempts for a truce in the fighting have failed, including the U.N.-supported four-day cease-fire that was meant to coincide with a major Muslim holiday last week, leaving the international community at a loss for ways to end the war.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday called for a major leadership overhaul and suggested Washington would handpick more representative leaders, including those fighting the regime. The opposition conference in the Qatari capital, Doha, starts on Sunday.

Coaching Class Online: Girls' Fitness and Health - The Women's ...

There are lots of ladies' health and fitness websites several are bit more than advertising but a majority of others provide you with a great source of information and facts related to women issues. Medical research details from studies, health problems, fitness, and also diet, and also prevention and therapy information and facts.

It is necessary for women to receive exact information about issues that instantly refer to their health and that include the most recent on women's health and fitness. What was a concept about the perfect advice only a year or so ago now has been upgraded?

The most frequent causes of woman's inability to conceive are hormone disproportion, troubles in the womb, or ovarian malfunction. Due to the fact that there are so many components that go into having a baby, it can take several lab tests to figure out what the issues are.

But with this longer life span have come raised health problems, chronic condition and disease associated with old age, just like dementia and osteoporosis, and weakness to reduced socio-economic status. A lot of women still presume the home's entire obligation for the health of the family. Women continue their care-giving jobs in their later years.

Women's health and well-being is completely getting the same recognition that males have for years. Suddenly we realize that besides assisting to keep the pounds off women also have to be sure that they're coping with their aerobic workouts.

Females may deal extra focus on the way they look and feel more than males do. Generally women are quite a bit more in tune to the signals their bodies are sending them plus they're also far more involved in health and fitness and how it can affect their entire wellness.

The Women's Collective is a popular template in many cultures. Women's Health continues to be an empty system in-spite of lip services. At the individual levels, it cannot be said that health occupies a considerable spot. It is generally exposed to other desires defined as more significant, example: money, power, prestige, understanding, and security. Health is frequently taken for granted, and its value isn't totally understood until it is lost.

Iraqi tourist sector hurt by Iran's currency pain

NAJAF, Iraq (AP) ? The plunge in Iran's currency is proving bad for business in neighboring Iraq.

Yousif Jassim Mohammed would know. The Iraqi merchant's gift shop sits on prime real estate opposite the gold-domed Imam Ali shrine in Najaf, one of the holiest sites for Shiite Muslims and a huge draw for the busloads of Iranian pilgrims that form the bedrock of Iraq's tourist trade.

Not long ago, the 60-year-old father of three could count on selling $1,000 worth of silver jewelry, prayer beads and trinkets a day. Now far fewer Iranians are now passing by, and those who do come are holding tight to their cash. Mohammed says he's lucky to make a tenth of what he used to.

"Unlike before, they're now bargaining down to their last breath," Mohammed said of his remaining Iranian customers. "The sanctions have hit their economy very badly, and that is being reflected back on us."

The Iranian rial has plummeted in value against the dollar over the past year, with the slide accelerating over the past month. The drop is blamed on Western-led sanctions targeting Iran's suspect nuclear program but also on government mismanagement by Tehran.

The steep decline is painful for ordinary Iranians, who now have to pay far more for imported goods. But it is also damaging Iraq's fragile tourism industry, pinching small-time entrepreneurs and forcing businesses to lay off workers.

Fewer Iranians are now able to afford visits to Shiite holy sites here and elsewhere in Iraq because each dollar or Iraqi dinar now costs roughly three times what it did as recently as last year. That has pushed the price of organized tours up sharply and made Iraqi merchants far less willing to accept rials as payment.

"It's more expensive now because of the (currency) problems we are facing," said Nakhi Morteza, 56, a pilgrim from Tehran who was helping lead a tour group outside Baghdad's Kazimiyah shrine this week.

Even some Iraqi money changers are refusing to accept Iranian banknotes, saying they have little use for a currency that is so volatile.

Tehran's state-run pilgrimage company owes Iraqis about $75 million in unpaid bills that have piled up since last year, according to Mahmoud Abdul-Jabbar al-Zubaidi, the head of the tourist department at Iraq's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

That has prompted some of Iraq's biggest travel agencies and several hotels to stop accepting Iranian pilgrims altogether until the payment dispute gets resolved.

Iman Rasool Nima, who runs the Janat al-Firdous hotel outside the Kazimiyah shrine, said she stopped taking in Iranian pilgrims two months ago after tour groups racked up $50,000 in unpaid bills.

She is now focusing on attracting Shiite pilgrims from Arab countries such as Bahrain and Saudi Arabia instead. Iranian pilgrims account for about 95 percent of Iraq's tourist trade.

"The Iranians make up the bulk of our business. ... So of course our business is down," she said.

The head of one large Iraqi travel agency in Najaf said he is owed $5 million by the Iranians and won't be accepting any more pilgrims from the Islamic Republic for now.

The businessman, who declined to be named because he is still in negotiations about the unpaid bills, expects to lay off 35 of his 75 employees by the end of this month because of the lost Iranian customers.

Like others in the industry, he is insisting on being paid in dollars rather than rials.

"It is like committing suicide for any merchant in Iraq to deal in a fluctuating currency like riyals today," he said.

Officials at Iran's Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization, which arranges trips to religious sites abroad, refused to comment.

But Iranian media quoted several officials earlier this month as saying that the cost of travelling to Iraq has doubled. The acknowledgement came days after Iran's currency, the rial, lost nearly 50 percent of its value in early October.

About 3,500 to 4,000 Iranian pilgrims had been traveling to Iraq daily before the rial's collapse, according to officials in both countries.

Iraq's tourism ministry has not recorded a drop in pilgrims so far, al-Zubaidi said. But business owners and local officials in pilgrimage centers tell a different story.

Saeeb Abuqneem, who owns the al-Farqadain hotel in Najaf and heads the city's hotel association, estimates that the number of Iranians visiting Iraq has dropped to about 2,500 per day.

He says he's able to fill only about 10 percent of his rooms these days and has begun laying off employees. Several of the remaining uniformed staffers sat around the lobby looking bored during a recent visit.

"It's really bad. The private sector needs some kind of support from the government. But here in Iraq, we are paralyzed," he said.

Hotel owners and restaurants in nearby Karbala, where two revered Shiite saints are buried, have similar concerns, officials there say.

Like elsewhere in Iraq, some business owners are effectively boycotting Iranian tour groups until the payment issue is resolved. Some establishments will likely have to shut down if the crisis continues, said Mohammed al-Hir, who heads Karbala's hotel and restaurant association.

"The situation has hurt Karbala's economy," said Tareq al-Khegani, a member of the provincial council in Karbala. "The unemployment rate has risen. ... Most of the hotels and restaurants are empty."

In Najaf's old market, the mood is heavy.

Hussein al-Hamiri, a 31-year old owner of a textile and souvenir shop, said he now sells mostly to Iraqis and the small number of pilgrims who visit from other countries. He estimates business is down nearly 90 percent since the rial plunged.

"The market today is stagnant," he said.

Nearby, one of the few Iranian pilgrims in the market started examining a necklace in his hands. When the merchant mentioned the price, the Iranian raised his eyebrows in surprise, dropped the piece immediately and quickly walked away.

The Reference Frame: Paul Frampton: from prison to house arrest

For everyone who have been at least a bit worried about Paul Frampton who got fooled by a fake Czech Californian supermodel in Argentine whose gang inserted some drugs to his luggage, there is some semi-good news.

Drugs suspect freed from jail, Google News
The officials finally noticed that Paul coughs badly. Paul will stay with an old friend who lives in Buenos Aires.

It's progress and let's hope it's not the final one. By the way, a few days ago, Paul recommended UNC to double his salary.

I spent 3 minutes by searching a picture at Google Images where Denise Milani, Paul's believed sweetheart, is mostly dressed ? I hope you appreciate the work. ;-)

Rethinking reading instruction

ScienceDaily (Nov. 1, 2012) ? Many educators have long believed that when words differ on only one sound, early readers can learn the rules of phonics by focusing on what is different between the words. This is thought to be a critical gateway to reading words and sentences.

But scientists at the University of Iowa are turning that thinking on its head. A recent study published in Developmental Psychology shows certain kinds of variation in words may help early readers learn better. When children see the same phonics regularities, embedded in words with more variation, they may learn these crucial early reading skills better. What might appear to make learning a more difficult task -- learning about letter-sound relationships from words with more variation -- actually leads to better learning.

Doctoral student Keith Apfelbaum and associate professors Bob McMurray and Eliot Hazeltine of the Department of Psychology in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) studied 224 first-grade students in the West Des Moines, Iowa school system over a period of three months. The group used a version of an online supplementary curriculum called Access Code.

Access Code was developed by Foundations in Learning, a company founded by Carolyn Brown and Jerry Zimmermann. Brown and Zimmermann earned their doctorates from and are now adjunct faculty in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, also in CLAS. Based on the Varied Practice Model, which helps children master early reading skills like phonics, the research team used Access Code to conduct the study directly in the classroom.

During the study, one group of students learned using lists of words with a small, less variable set of consonants, such as maid, mad, paid, and pad. This is close to traditional phonics instruction, which uses similar words to help illustrate the rules and, presumably, simplify the problem for learners. A second group of students learned using a list of words that was more variable, such as bait, sad, hair, and gap, but which embodied the same rules.

After three or four days of training on phonics skills, partaking in activities such as spelling and matching letters, the students from both groups were tested to see if they could read words that they had never seen before, read novel non-words, and apply their newly-learned skills to tasks they hadn't done before.

"We were interested in not just whether they could do exactly what we were teaching, but whether they could learn something more robust that would enable them to apply what they had learned to new tasks and new words," McMurray says. "Critically, we wanted to know if variability or similarity would impact this ability to learn and generalize."

Results surprised even the research team.

"We were expecting a very subtle effect, maybe similar words would help students learn the words they were trained on but maybe not generalize as well, or maybe similar words would help them learn the more difficult rules but variability might work for the easier ones, but in no case was similarity helpful," McMurray says. "This suggests a powerful principle of learning. While we've known about this in a variety of laboratory tasks for a while, this study shows for the first time that this principle also applies to early reading skills."

Overall, variation led to much better learning. Students experiencing more variation in words showed better learning when tested on the words and tasks they encountered in training. More importantly, it helped them generalize these new skills to new words, and to new tasks.

"Variability was good for the low-performing students, it was good for the high-performing students. It was good for the boys, it was good for the girls. It was good for the words, it was good for the non-words," Apfelbaum says. "Among the students who struggled the most, the kids who weren't exposed to variation didn't show any learning at all, while the kids who were exposed to variation did."

Robert Davis, an educator for 36 years and principal of Hillside Elementary, which was one of the schools that participated in the study, says he is eager to work with his teachers on ways to apply varied practice to the classroom.

"If we really look at what happened with the research, there is a multitude of applications that could go forward with this," Davis says. "We could certainly look at varied practice as a method for learning new vocabulary, as a new method for learning basic math facts, maybe even something involved with music. As educators, we need to figure out how to take that model and apply it to the umbrella of learning for a variety of things that kids struggle with."

Brown, whose research has focused on child development, language acquisition, and reading for more than three decades, says she looks forward to continued collaboration with the UI research team.

"We hope this collaboration is only the beginning to bringing the science of learning to the art of teaching children to read," Brown says. "We have missed many children because reading pedagogy has been driven by systems of belief in how reading should be taught rather than by how children learn. The importance of variation in this process will be a surprise to many educators and a help to many children."

Turning the tables ? my client interviews me

Our client, InnovativEvents, a leading decor and event management company, interviewed me and did a feature story on Cooper Smith & Company in their latest November 2012 newsletter. It was such fun, I thought I?d share it with you here. The photo above is some of the branded collateral we have created for InnovativEvents. We?re currently in development for their new website. Check out the site now, then check back in December to see the new site!

The article, excerpted from the InnovativEvents November newsletter, said:

If you are searching for a marketing firm that provides you with work that looks and sounds unique to your business, Cooper Smith & Company is the one to turn to! We sat down with Sally, owner of Cooper Smith & Company, to learn more?

?Q:How did you decide to start Cooper Smith & Company?
A: I?ve always been passionate about the potential that great marketing and design can have on helping companies achieve their business goals. Before I started Cooper Smith & Company, I was the design director of a small design agency, but when management changed it became clear that they didn?t share my perspective. I knew it was time to prove my theories and break out on my own.

Q: What got you interested in marketing?
A: It?s what got me interested, and still keeps me going today: marketing, when well written and designed, can transform a company. I?ve seen proper marketing energize employees, excite stakeholders and encourage customers to develop deep and lasting relationships with the company.

Q: What range of services do you offer clients?
A: We offer advertising, marketing and communications services. These services include: logos and identity development, brand management, brochure and print creation, website design and development, tradeshow marketing and advertising campaigns.

Q: How long have you been in business?
A: We will celebrate our 20th Anniversary in June of 2013. It might be time for a party!

Q: What was your most fun project to design?
A: We love what we do, so consequently, the project we?re working on currently is often the most fun. We are currently really enjoying the work we are doing for InnovativEvents! Be sure to watch for their new website.

Q: What do you love most about your job?
A: I love helping our clients succeed, especially when their success exceeds their own expectations! I tell clients it?s not uncommon to realize a ten-fold return on a campaign. They won?t believe me until they see it.

Q: What makes Cooper Smith & Co. unique from other marketing firms?
A: We don?t have a house ?style.? Our work looks and sounds unique to each client. We have an extensive investigative process we use to determine what approach best suits a client, and always find an approach that reflects their culture and persona.

?Lewis, your ?Linked-Influence? course has totally changed the way I do business. Everyday, people are now calling me to ?review? their LinkedIn page so I can give them advice on how to make their LinkedIn Profile better. Yes, I learned all this expertise from your ?LinkedInfluence? course. In fact, I have been charting my business growth each week and now it?s very obvious when I started incorporating ?LinkedIn Marketing Techniques? within my team. The first 12 weeks of growth were fairly flat ? as compared to ? week 12 on. Now people ask me ?What caused my business growth chart to *Skyrocket into Orbit*? The answer is, International Growth due to the LinkedIn marketing tips I learned from ?Linked-Influence?. Thanks again! ?

?Hi Lewis, I am half way through your course and can already see its benefits. ?Hello Lewis, Sadie here in France, I recently bought your online course LinkedInfluence; it is fantastic! I did exactly as you instructed with regard to better keyword usage within my profile. As soon as I implemented your tips, my profile appeared at the top of LinkedIn?s search results for the term ?Local Marketing? using the location ?anywhere?. There are over 550,000 results. Previously I was half way down page 6! My company helps local business owners, globally, who have no idea where to begin with marketing their business online, making it simple, painless and profitable. I?ve started to outsource some tasks now because since raising my profile on LinkedIn, I?m being asked to go out into the business community here in France and share my knowledge with small business owners. It?s a lot of fun! I have been recommending LinkedInfluence to other people based on my own experience. Thank you very much for your help.?

?Summary of what your LinkedInfuence brought me: I grew my connections from 280 to 450 and counting. I?ve received two job interviews and possibly one offer ? pending. I?m branding myself better and linking tweets to status updates. In my social media consulting gig for an upstate inn, after joining groups, I grew our Facebook following by about 26%. You connected me to Gary V. via a webinar, and now I read ?Crush It?, and am an even bigger follower of his.? Thanks, Lewis ? you crushed it with your LinkedInfluence! Kat

?Before reading LinkedIn Master Strategies, I didn?t realize the importance of keyword targeting in certain areas on my profile to gain results more effectively. I had no idea about the power of updating my profile as often as possible. After reading Lewis Howes?s book, I have a clear understanding of how to leverage LinkedIn... Read more...
